Recent RAZR/RAZR Maxx update broke IMAP mail access

I am responsible for backend IMAP mail server (UofW IMAP) support and recently, two customers have come in reporting connection problems to the IMAP server from their Moto RAZR and Moto RAZR Maxx phones.  Both of these users had working configs with the only change is that both had automatic updates enabled and their phones were recently updated.  I do not know the versions the phones were updated from or to.

One user's spouse has the same phone and mail config as her husbands, but without auto-updates enabled and her mail access still works fine.

I have worked with one user and disabled secure access to our IMAP server and then traced the connection.  The login succeeds, but then the phone's IMAP client sends a NAMESPACE command, the server responds with the current name spaces, then the phone client responds with CLOSE which the server responds with "BAD Command unrecognized: CLOSE, then the phone client sends LOGOUT.

This process then repeats until the phone client displays an error regarding connecting to the server.

Does anyone know what happened recently to the mail IMAP client on the latest release?  I've had the users remove and then recreate their IMAP mail accounts but that hasn't help either.

Our current suggestion to other Verizon Droid users it to make sure that auto-updates are turned off, but we currently have no solution for the two people who have already had their phones updated.

I can upload a tcpdump trace of the connection if it would be helpful to anyone.

Any suggestions???

Thanks,

Tom

The exact same thing happened to me ... before upgrade, fine.  After upgrade, login to incoming server fails.

Hello tomleach.

I'm sorry to hear your having difficulties with the two devices and the server. I did not see any issue with update and IMAP email. Did these devices have any new applications that could be effecting the email? Thanks for checking the log ins and adding and removing the email account. Are they experiencing the same issue with their Gmail account? Please make sure Wifi is disabled and retest.

The next step would be to backup the devices and perform a hard reset. Here's a link for the reset for the RAZR and RAZR Maxx: http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=49625

Please let me know if this helps,

Thank you

Joe - I had sent a direct e.mail to verizon service over this and talked

with a level 2 tech person at

hq.verizonwireless.com  (see RE: Mobile Office <personal information deleted per the TOS>.   I was one

of the people that tomleach had been trying to support with this

problem.   We followed most of your

suggestions below with the Verizon tech (Brie) and never solved the

problem.  We did not do a hard reset.

The bottom line is that the phone was new (~1 day old) and was

setup/working with both IMAP and POP3

accounts ... g.mail, comcast, etc.   The phone auto-updated and

immediately began failing to connect to

the incoming imap server.   Tom and I did lots of tracking, logging the

connection attempt from the mobile

client (with SSL turned off so that it arrived to the server in clear

text).   Tom's post describes the point of

failure, a "close" command issued by the droid, which is rejected by the

server, at which point the droid

logs off the connection.    I went through all the power-cycle;

install/reinstall;  sending out mail (successful)

and checking a variety of other variables (Wi-Fi was off; no new apps;

etc.) ... no joy.

Brie suggested that it looked like I had to wait for the new version of

the system software scheduled for

sometime in April ... hopefully this will be fixed.  In the mean time, I

am relying on a 3rd-party android

app for my e.mail (K-9).

has there been any 'official' word on this issue and when in April an update may be available?

Why do you think that a update will be in April if no one ever verified the nature of the problem, until the problem gets identified no fix can be released..

Same issue. email IMAP updates broken on my RAZR since update. This was with gmail set up as primary email account.

Tried closing account, reopening. Power cycle, all that stuff.

Downloaded gmail app. Using that instead of email app that comes with phone.

Additional question: Where is the setting to disable automatic OS updates on the RAZR?

There is no such Setting:  you can however decide not to get the Updates by pushing the time to update but sooner or later it will start the update.

I am curious if anyone with this has tried a Factory Reset (backup data first as it will be erased) or starting in Safe Mode (data is not delted, but you may not see it because only essential apps started)?

I have searched for this problem on other forums and not found it. I do see listings in the Release Notes that could potentially affect this but I would expect to see widespread issues reported, which I'm not seeing.   So I'm just curious if anyone here has tried either of these troubleshooting techniques to rule out problems with these particular phones or installed apps?

Sally - we did not try the factory reset nor Safe Mode (I didn't think about it).  I did ask if I could go back to the previous version ... no, that was not an option.   I agree - I would have expected more instances reported out there - I do see some discussion of difficulties with some 3rd party mail services, but not many.   My phone was only 2 days old and did not have any apps other than the standard issue.   The tech spoke of a new system upgrade release scheduled for sometime in April ... so I thought that I'd stick it out with my 3rd party client and see if the new release fixes things.

I'd say has good suggestion in trying the F.R. it may be what the phone needs. for as on my Maxx i haven't seen to many flair ups from it. there are some area's i don't use it as others do but i still use mine quite well. An as for Updates they can be good for the phone but sometimes the Software doesn't like to dance to well together so doing a F.R. clears the hostilities between the two. It's you call to decide however to go about it. An if there is a new update come in April i will this time do a F.R. on my Maxx.. B33

Have you tried clearing the data for the email client and configure the account manually because I have learned that under some situations the emails client data file gets corrupted when the OS is installed, sometimes this can help..

Goto Settings / Applications / Manage Applications / All / Media Storage / Clear Data and then reboot and reconfigure the account.

My Razr Maxx is right out of the box as of yesterday and the IMAP incoming won't connect to the server.  Outgoing connects fine.  The same server settings on my Thrive work.  ??

I had the same problem after the last upgrade, so I've been delaying accepting the prompt to upgrade this time around.

Still, if the battery runs low and the phone shuts off (a somewhat unpredictable occurrence, even if I am near a tower), I get a message "SIM card removed", need to sign in (to my email) but it doesn't accept my password (that I've verified via  account on computer).  The only option is a factory reset which I have not done as I'm still trying to find out how to verify that what I think I've back-up IS ACTUALLY backed up.

There was a solution w/in another thread that works 1. press on/off button once - to get menu including airplane mode 2. select airplane mode 3. turn phone off completely 4. turn it back on (it will still be in airplane mode) 5. make a phone call (will get menu "do you want to turn off airplane mode" select yes 6. need to stay on a connected call for several minutes.  when you hang up, phone should work.  if not repeat, talk longer.

I believe the problem has to do with the resident mail client on phones running Android 2.3.x...aka "Gingerbread"...and I believe I have a solution. (From what I've read, this issue has affected Samsung Galaxy S phones as well as the Motorola Droid RAZR phones.)  Anyway, my wife and I just spent the past two days trying to determine the right combination of settings to use in configuring our new Droid RAZRs so she could gain access to her IMAP-based campus "deskmail" account. We were able to verify (authenticate) our settings with both the incoming and outgoing mail servers, but we could never get the contents of the Inbox folder to display.

At the suggestion of a campus IT smartphone guru named Eugene, I downloaded a free open source mail client app named "K-9 Mail."  It is based on the original Android mail configuration standard, which also happens to be the mail client resident on the Motorola A855s that we were upgrading and which were running Android 2.2.x (Froyo).  After downloading and installing K-9 Mail, I clicked "Open" and the app walked me through a nearly screen-for-screen replica of what we had (successfully) used to configure her account on the Motorola A855. In less than 30 seconds, her campus Inbox came up just fine. Good thing it did, too, as it was looking for all the world like she might drop-kick her new Droid RAZR and promptly trade it in for two dixie cups and a very long string!  (Decent pricing on that data plan, I can tell you.)

FYI - I went so far as to perform the factory reset on the Droid RAZR (to no avail) before coming across this discussion thread.  Hope that helps.
