Screen Cracking issue - what to do?

From what I can tell, the screens on Droid Motorola Maxx phones are a failure.  If you are considering a purchase of this phone, stay away!  Unfortunately, I am one of many people who have experienced a cracked screen.  This does not happen from dropping or other abuse.  In my case, I put my phone in my pocket (like I've done with every other smartphone I've ever owned Droid 1, Droid X, Droid Bionic) and later when I took it out, the Gorilla Glass screen was cracked.  There are some theories out there about the thin profile of the phone combined with the huge battery that makes the phone weak if it heats up.  Maybe the battery bulges and the glass can't handle the expansion?  I'd love to hear from the experts on whether this is true or not.

Ok, so that's half of the disappointment.  Once your screen is cracked, there is no recourse on replacement - except expensive options.  Perhaps as enough of us run into this issue, Motorola will begin to stand behind their product and replace or refund.  At this point, Motorola will replace the screen for about $150.  I've heard this process works sometimes, although sometimes the repair is less than great and the replacement is unacceptable.  I don't mind paying for repairs when its clearly my fault for the damage, but when it seems to be a faulty product I'd expect the product to be replaced or refunded.  Especially, when the reports continue to flood in of others having the same issue.

Verizon will be unable to help as well.  They will refer you onto the third party insurance company for replacement.  This will cost you $100 deductible if you carry insurance and your phone will likely be replaced with a refurbished phone.  Again, not a bad option if in fact the phone was damaged by the user, but when the damage seems to be a bad product to begin with, it is hard to shell out the money.

I know this discussion will probably be followed by many saying I need to man up and admit that I dropped the phone.  That's ok, the doubters can spout what they want - the other folks out there who have had the same issue I have can back me up.

So, if nothing else, I hope this will be helpful information for people looking to buy the Droid X Maxx.  Make sure you do the homework on this product.
