I just recently got a Droid Razr HD. I LOVE it (had a Droid Charge before) except the lack of ability to control the separate volumes is driving me crazy.
I can only control the volume of the ringtone from the phone's audio settings. It doesn't really bother me that the ringtone volume also changes the notification volume, but it does really bother me that the ringtone volume affects the ALARM volume. What is the point of using a silent ringtone at night if IT ALSO SILENCES YOUR ALARM?
I have woken up late several mornings in a row now while I try out different fixes. Perhaps there is something I am missing on the phone? Alternately, is there an app anyone can recommend that can help me adjust the individual volumes?

Until you find a fix and waking up late is a problem for you, I would suggest NOT silencing the phone if you are going to depend on it as an alarm.
