I solved my problem by uninstalling chrome then using the factory version.
I have since updated and it is still working fine.

It's important you are able to access websites, flash636. Were you connected to WiFi or 4G? Are you experiencing any problems with other websites? At what point when going to www.google.com did you receive "This site can't be reached?"

I'm getting it too when accessing https:// sites via chrome. At the end of the 'site can't be reached' message is an error that reads: ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT. Only happens on my phone, a Droid Razr M running 4.4.2. Doesn't happen on my Nexus 7 tablet running 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Googling this error indicated that it is either a probem with SSL certificate not allowing authentication or a bug in this version of chrome 50.0.261.89 which involves something called SSL Acelerator being unable to 'handshake' with the SSL stack in the phone so the site is closed prematurely from google's end. In the past, updates to Chrome usually fixed it, but no telling how long that will be. It seems this is a problem with older devices than with newer ones,
Workaround for GMail is to use the app; I don't have a problem receiving email with the app.
Incidentally, what phone, version of chrome, and android are you using?
