Why does Google keep telling me my username is unavailable?

Hi Trying to get an account with Google so I can download apps and I keep getting a message that this account and no matter what I put in for username it comes up "The username ---isn't available'.  [removal required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service] !

I would try a different username.  I am assuming that the ones that you have tried have already been taken....
