They call it airplane mode, because this is what you would enable when you are going on a flight. It makes your phone, not a phone..  It shuts the phone and mobile data off, you will not be able to make or receive calls or text messages, or do any kind of applications or anything on the phone through Mobile Data. You could turn wifi on and browse the internet and use data that way if there is wifi available for you to connect to.

yo, they don't want you/anyone using wi-fi on the airplane either, unless it's available thru the airline & you pay for it.

Yes, I know... I was using the airplane as an example of why they named it that. There are a lot of other places where you could use airplane mode, but still be able to turn on wifi. That was what I was pointing out.

The most valuable thing it will do for you is stop your phone from burning up the battery because it is searching for a tower.

If you work indoors or are in a location where the phone can not get a signal from any tower, the phone keeps looking for the tower. Searching uses a lot of power. Once connected to a tower, the phone just kinda goes into idle and waits.

I've put mine in Airplane at work when the battery was at 90% and 12 hours later it was still at 90%. Leaving it searching for the same 12 hours will knock it from 90% to 40%.

Airplane also turns your phone into a simple PDA. Clock and calendar, MP3 player (if you have the music on the phone and are not streaming it) etc.
