battery went dead. recharged but when tried to start the pic of battery with question mark came on. Black screen if not plugged in, but only battery pic.

How long has it been plugged in charging? Are you using the wall charger that came with the phone? Try a soft reset of the phone, hold down the volume down button plus the power button at the same time for about 10 seconds.
