deleting multiple emails

I have a new Maxx with ICS 4.0.4.  When gmail was set up it downloaded 2000+ messages, none of which I need on the phone.  How do I delete groups or bunches messages at once?

Easiest Way and the Way i would Do it is Go to Gmail on the P.C. side and Have a Delete Fest.. if you try on this on your phone and i'm not saying it can't be done but Look at the Battery your going to Use in the Process.!

Thanks, B33.  I did that yesterday for an entirely different reason, anticipating exchanging the Maxx for something a bit smaller, and it worked. Nothing left on the phone except one message I didn't delete on the PC.  That must be an indication that the sync function is working.
