silence phone

since the software update the other day, I cant find the setting to silence the phone. It used to be under the sound setting.

What phone do you have? What update?

I have the droid razr HD. it was a software update that came automatically

Your phone's Operating System was updated to Jelly Bean.  You may now have to go into the Volumes setting and slide the volume bars all the way off on each category rather than have an overall phone Silent Mode (and if that's the case, that's a bummer, if you ask me).

  What about just using the volume buttons on the side? That silences everything, doesn't it?

If you briefly hold the power button down do you get a screen similar to the following? It has selections for Silence Speaker, Vibration, and Speaker modes at the bottom.
