upgrading a line to xoom plan at full price

hi.  I have a vzw line thats not eligible to upgrade but I never use the phone on that line.  I am thinking about purchasing the xoom at full price and activating it on that line.  Will it change my upgrade date if I buy at full price?  Can I get a month to month data plan or do I have to get a 1 or 2 year?  thanks

Thank you everyone for your help. When you purchase any device at the full retail price, it will not reset the upgrade date on any line it is being activated on. It is only when you take advantage of the upgrade discount that will renew your agreement.
Therefore davidchidsey, you can purchase the Zoom at month to month price (full retail) and convert the voice line into a data plan. The contract/upgrade date will stay the same for that line.
**Note jasnmar: In this case, the Zoom will have a wireless number assigned to it since it is using a VZW data plan and VZW network.  Alternately, you can purchase the Zoom at full retail and not activate a data plan. You would be free to use the device with your preferred WiFi connection, same as purchasing a netbook.

It's not a phone. It doesn't have a phone number, just a data plan.
Any other lines you have are immaterial. You can buy it outright for $799 or for $599 with a 2 year data plan.

I am not entirely sure, but I think there is a phone number attached to the usb devices and other 3g/LTE connections device.  It is how they identify the line of service.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

There is an MEID, but a phone number isn't required. You use the primary number to "associate" it with the account, but the device doesn't have a phone number or "line"associated with it.
Mine actually doesn't even have a data plan Smiley Happy

SOOOOO wrong, Jason. All VzW internet devices (USB modems, Mifi, the new 4g SIM cards, netbooks, and yes, tablets, including the Xoom) have a mobile number. Every VzW line of service has a phone number. The Xoom won't make phone calls, or text message, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a phone number. Pull up your myverizon acct with a tablet on it (Galaxy Tab or Xoom, doesn't matter) and you'll see a phone number attached.

To answer the original question: it will not affect the upgrade or contract end dates in any way shape or form to activate a full-retail Xoom on that line.

Jax - I disagree. Not all vzw devices get a number. My xoom does not have a mobile number. Of course I don't have a vzw line of service either, so we're probably splitting hairs.

At least we agree that the purchase won't impact the existing line / upgrade eligiblity of the OP. Smiley Happy

Don't believe me? Call customer service, ask them for the mobile number of your Xoom. They'll give you one.

I have a mobile number for my Xoom- but here's the be-all-end-all:

The Xoom's 3G radio doesn't support Voice bands, so it cannot make phone calls over 3G. LTE? Not sure, who knows. Probably no.

Thanks for the info Gina, one question though. If it's not and never has been on a VZW data plan does the device have a phone number?

Thanks again.

The device wouldn't have a phone number assigned to it when there is no VZW monthly plan. Similar to buying a phone at full retail and never activating a phone number.

When a wireless number is activated, it acts as connection to call the network to send/receive data as same using a phone as a modem to tether to the internet.
