You could also go to 'Blocks' under 'My plans and services' on the Verizonwireless website and add that number that way you won't be cluttering up your contacts on your phone. It will only block it for a certain amount of time though.
The only way I managed to block calls without having to purchase an app is by adding the number you are trying to block as a new contact. Then forward all calls from that contact to voice mail which can be done from the edit contact settings. For example, I have a telemarketer that calls every day, I saved the number under the name "Nope". Then I clicked the three dot symbol to enable Forward all calls to voice mail. I have not been bothered since.
