How fix severe battery drain since 7.1.1 update?

Ever since I did the 7.1.1 update on my phone (Moto Z Droid)it is all [removed] up!  Battery severely drains, only get maybe an hour of use..if lucky!  Phone dies even when says that has enough battery left.  Some of my apps aren't working correctly.  Tried everything to fix...and last resort did factory reset which actually seemed to make it worse!  I really liked the phone when I got it but now it is worthless!  I can ONLY use it if I keep it plugged in all the time.  So much for being a "mobile" phone.  I can't take it anywhere cause it will die in a few hours because the battery drains even when NOT in use and even in Safe Mode!  My phone was working fine before I did this 7.1.1 update.  I so regret doing it because it has totally ruined my phone.

I have applied each of the potential fixes listed here other than warrantying out the phone itself. I will be taking it to a Verizon store this weekend, but to update this thread with my issue:

About 3-4 weeks ago Andriod version 7.1.1 was installed as one of the mandatory updates. After that I started to notice that my phone would just die when it would get down to the 20% mark on the battery gauge. Since then I started charging my phone more often and the issue seems to have gotten worse. I have checked my battery usage and applications and cleaned up high usage apps that could be removed and disabled others. A factory reset had no effect on the systems battery life that I can tell,

Doing the reboot by holding down the power button for 30-40 seconds will, unless the phone is plugged in drop the battery anywhere between 20-50% of what the battery said it was when the reboot was initiated. Just recently I did this reboot with the phone at 69%, with it plugged into my computers USB3.0 charging port and when it came back online the phone was reporting 8% battery left.

Just as an update, I just took my phone to a Verizon store and had the battery checked. It passed the tests without issue, despite my battery percent reading 79% before rebooting and 16% after. It is very frustrating when trying to use the phone but makes it easy to demonstrate the problem.

CholinMS, we appreciate all the effort that you’ve put in thus far to help resolve this concern with your battery life. We understand that this has been a recent issue for you after the last update and we definitely want to make sure that you have a good amount of battery life left to rely on. Just to make sure that we’re all on the same page, are you only noticing the change to the battery life when you’re rebooting the phone? Can you tell us if you’ve already performed a factory reset (https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-205215/) on the phone as well? If so, did you ensure that the Automatic Restore (https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-205171/) option was turned off prior to doing so? After the factory reset, how was your experience with the battery life?

The most drastic changes to the battery percentage are during the reboots, but even without rebooting I have seen my phone or from 100% when plugged in to 60% in less that 5 minutes.

For the factory reset I did perform one but did not see a change in battery life afterwords like others have seen.

To add to the issue I just got back from lunch where my phone was plugged into my car charger for an hour, the battery was at 95% at that time. I sat down at my desk and 10 minutes later it was reporting 63%. I rebooted the phone and when it came back online was reporting 73%, without being plugged in. Less than a minute later the phone died and would not start again until I plugged it into my USB cable plugged into my computer. As soon as it was online again the battery percentage was at 30% and is currently charging.

I have also noticed that there are times where the phone will flicker continuously from charging to not charging when plugged into a computer and the computer sees continuous connection and disconnects from the phone. I have not noticed this issue when plugged into the original power cable though.

CholinMS, we want to be sure your phone is properly holding a charge, especially in this day and age. Since you have the performed the factory reset, did you restore all your information right away after the reset? As for the charging issue, please use the charging cable that came with the device and plugging it into an outlet instead of using a vehicle charger or computer. We recommend leaving it charging overnight to ensure it receives the proper charge it needs.

I think the Verizon answers must be automated replies. It is like they don't even read, or cannot comprehend what is being stated by their customers in this (and other) 9 pages of issues. The answers all start out with some feel good condescending fake sympathy, and then proceed to provide nothing of substance to resolve issues with these particular phones. This is clearly a systemic problem that is dragging on and will force many to purchase new phones.

MADMAXMUTT, no fake sympathy here at all. The battery has to work, hands-down. I combed the thread and found a point made by MrDondo in post #48. Have you tried the suggested step of disabling then re-enabling “Google Play Services” in your app manager? What were your results? Please keep us posted.

vzw_customer_support As you probably also read, that function seems to be locked by Verizon on Google Play Services. If you care to unlock it for me on my kid's phone, I would be happy to perform that step. I have cleared the cache and all data related to Google Play Services, though.

MADMAXMUTT, I apologize for any confusion. We aren't trying to remove Google Play Service. Can you please provide a screen shot of what you see when you get to the final step of the provided process?

I understood what you were asking. I didn't try to remove Google Play Services. I tried to disable it, which is locked out for some reason.   No joy.

MADMAXMUTT, phones certainly can be expensive these days, so I can see why you'd be concerned. If you have extended warranty on your account, then this would be a great time to take advantage of that feature. I am a bit puzzled to hear that with your extended warranty feature, you were made to pay out-of-pocket. The only possible way would be if there was damage found on your device. I have sent you a message to your inbox to ensure you get to take advantage of the extended warranty. Please reply to me there.

I charge every night using the original cable. The other chargers are to keep the phone alive throughout the day. Sometimes it will last 4-6 hours, others less than half an hour.

As for restoring my data, a good chunk of it had to go back on immediately as I use the phone for my work and need access to many of the systems remotely. So I can't go without many of my applications.

I do know that my battery goes much faster when I play a game but that is to be expected and if the game is fully closed out it should not effect my battery life. If an application or game that I have not opened is able to drain the battery then there are other issues with the Operating system than we currently know about.

cholinMS, I appreciate those additional details. I would like to obtain a closer look at what your phone is reporting as the source of the drain. Accordingly, when the device does drop significantly during a short time frame, please take a screenshot of the usage screen under Settings>Battery>Use since last full charge and post it in this thread.

I saw this just after getting back from lunch and my phone was at 89%. I took a screen shot of that point in time for the battery:

2018-05-07 13.18.07.png

I then took another screenshot about 5 minutes later:

2018-05-07 13.39.54.png

About 15 minutes after that I took another screenshot:

2018-05-07 13.47.30.png

And I was able to take a final screenshot 5-10 minutes later:

2018-05-07 13.53.20.png

After this last screenshot my phone lasted maybe 5 minutes before it died at around 37% battery left by the % at the top of my screen.

As you can see from the "Use since last full charge" section of my lest post I only had about 7% battery usage. Also after the phone died I could not restart it as the phone said the battery was at 0%, but after plugging it into my computer (The only charger I have available at the office right now) my phone jumped from 0% to 15% immediately after plugging it in.

Hopefully this gives you the information you were looking for.

Thank you for sharing those screenshots with us today, CholinMS. We’ve almost exhausted all of our troubleshooting before we explore warranty replacement options. We do have one last thing to test, however. What happens if you restart your device in safe mode? Do you notice any change in the battery drain? Here’s how to restart in safe mode: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-205258/

Safe mode will disable any 3rd party applications that may be impacting the battery life on your device. We recommend leaving your phone in safe mode for a full charge cycle.

I have tried safe mode a dozen times. No difference.

I did the testing in Safe Mode as you mentioned and took screenshots during the process. My battery life only increased by a few minutes and a 100% charge only lasted a little more than an hour.2018-05-10 09.32.16.png2018-05-10 09.41.16.png2018-05-10 10.47.29.png2018-05-10 10.47.38.png2018-05-10 11.23.30.png

Just after the 42% the phone died and would not turn on again until it had been plugged in.

scphil: I also ran through your suggestion and according to the AccuBattery App that had been recommended in  another forum my battery capacity was Estimated capacity 527 mAh of the Design capacity 3000 mAh.2018-05-09 05.31.10.png

After the recalibration my battery is now reporting 233 mAh as the estimated capacity.2018-05-10 14.12.35.png.

With all of that information I will be going into one of the Verizon stores again and find out what my warranty options are going to be. I don't want to have to pay the $140+ deductible if I don't have to and might just move back to my old phone before going that route.

I wish the kid's phone wasn't 5 months out of warranty. . .

There are hundreds of pages of complaints about this on the Lenova/Motorola site.  One thread with 117 pages. NO answers, but similar responses. Check your apps, calibrate battery, disable app, safe mode, clear cache, try this, try that, . . No joy.

Those, for the most part are the Canned responses. As for Warranty I am paying for the extended Warranty but if it ends up costing me just as much as a full buyout of the phone would I may just replace it.

That's what my wife and I did the last time we needed to do a warranty replacement under our extended plans...

CholinMS, I am all too familiar with having to weigh repair versus replacement. Fortunately, our protection plans have evolved recently, and your coverage options may be more varied than you remember. You can check on your options and save a trip to the store by visiting this link: http://spr.ly/6585DevjD If you enter your device make and model, phone number and zip code it will tell you what is available as far as replacement and repair are concerned. Is this information helpful?
