Ever since I did the 7.1.1 update on my phone (Moto Z Droid)it is all [removed] up! Battery severely drains, only get maybe an hour of use..if lucky! Phone dies even when says that has enough battery left. Some of my apps aren't working correctly. Tried everything to fix...and last resort did factory reset which actually seemed to make it worse! I really liked the phone when I got it but now it is worthless! I can ONLY use it if I keep it plugged in all the time. So much for being a "mobile" phone. I can't take it anywhere cause it will die in a few hours because the battery drains even when NOT in use and even in Safe Mode! My phone was working fine before I did this 7.1.1 update. I so regret doing it because it has totally ruined my phone.

My Moto Z Force was so bad I had to keep it plugged in all the time. Since no one at Verizon or Lenovo cares I pulled the SIM card and stuck in my old Nokia Windows Phone. Until Oreo is released my phone is, in essence, a land line.
Same issues and troubleshooting as everyone else. Issues:
1) Random shutdowns at varying battery levels
2) Phone "thinks" it is dead. You get a yellow triangle with ! Mark. Only way to turn on is to plug in with turbo charger. Car charger will not turn the phone back on
3) If I was lucky and it didn't shutdown the battery drain was beyond extreme. Went from 100% to 57% in 23 minutes. Said I had 15 minutes left. Phone then shutdown like it was dead and had to be plugged in to turn back on
4) These issues have progressively gotten worse. Now if I unplug the phone and go into an app it shutdown 90-95% of the time. The battery is at 100% and the phone thinks it is dead.
5) I rebooted in Safe Mode, went into the camera and the phone shutdown like it was dead.

I'm having the exact same issues!!!! My phone is pretty much useless at this point!!! I've been holdoho out for the Oreo update and it's getting ridiculous!! The amount of money I spend each month on a phone that can't hold a charge for more than an hour or so!!! Anyone heard any word on the Oreo update - seems like it's been in the works FOREVER!!!!

Notice how the mods have suddenly gone silent? If you're listening, could you give us a ballpark idea of when the Oreo update will arrive? This phone is not a cheap, no frills piece of hardware that we can afford to throw away.

MrDondo, we always want to ensure that you have the latest information available for your device. Please know that your safety is always a top-priority for us and we certainly wouldn’t want you to experience any excessive temperatures with your device. If your phone continues to reach these temperatures, we’d recommend avoiding additional usage and bring the phone into one of our corporate stores as soon as possible. You can view a full list of the available stores in your area at https://www.verizonwireless.com/stores/
To better assist with the battery concerns, we'd like to make sure we have a full understanding. Can you tell us when you started to experience this issue with the battery life? What's the current version of your device software? Have there been any recent changes that may have occurred on your device at all?

The battery drain problem started last year but was infrequent and random. It has become regular and severe over the last few weeks. It's running 7.1.1. No recent changes to phone at all.
Here is some good news: since I disabled and re-enabled Google Play Services, the battery drain has seemingly gone away. I went to bed last night with 54% of my battery left after having been unplugged for 12 hours with light use. Today I've been off the charger for 5 hours and still have 84% (I've hardly used the phone so far, though). No heat issues at all since messing with Google Play Services.

Great.
I will try that with our phones this evening.
Thanks for the tip.
As far as the overheating, good luck taking it to a corporate store.
Tried that last year with the daughters first Moto Z, they wanted nothing to do with an overheating phone. Luckily we had bought the protection plan so it only cost about $100 to replace it. It was less than 6 month old at the time, btw.

MrDondo, great to hear that your battery isn't draining and the heat issue has gone away. Did you need assistance with anything else?

Things are working fine now. After 20 hours unplugged yesterday I still had 20% battery left. That is acceptable for me.

Thank you MrDondo for your work on this! I have tried disabling and reenabling Google Paly services. When I did it, I was prompted did I want to reinstall the factory default app. Did you receive the same message? It seems kinda odd that I would get asked this when all I am doing is disabling a service, not uninstalling.

It's been a few weeks so I can't be 100% sure, but I think I did reset it to factory default settings.

Just because I went through this last week, I'm going to share because I
think this is the most current information out there. I had the same thing
going on with my phone and follow the same steps that you guys have just
done and there is no disable feature for Google Play services it is only
just reinstall if you uninstall it there was no other way,, so I didn't try
it. However, because I was covered under the insurance plan with Verizon I
was able to get a new phone at no cost proving that the battery life was
shortened due to manufacturer hardware failure. The ongoing problem lasted
for roughly 3 months and progressively got worse to the point where I could
not disconnect it from a charging source and I was miserable. A big thank
you and a huge sigh of relief thanks to the team over at Verizon. Good
luck guys! Btw, I was actually helped by two techs without any deficit in
service. Thanks to Ivan and Maggie my two mobile mayhem heros.

How were you able to disable Google Play Services? In my Apps, both Disable and Force Stop are grayed out. I tried the uninstall updates and get a notification stating, "Can't uninstall because this package is an active device administrator".

I want to make sure that your questions are answered. Google Play cannot be disabled or uninstalled. It is part of the software built into your device. You would have to talk to the manufacturer of your phone if you have additional questions about this service.

That's odd. I just went into my phone now and Disable and Force Stop were both options for Google Play Services.

i have the same issue. my phone is about 1 year old. and from couple weeks ago the battery starts to drain really really fast. one fully charged will only last 6 hours maximum for stand by now. tried to clear the cache. didn't get any better. it shows the Android system is using most of the power and the phone is getting very hot even when it's standing by. i think it's the system somehow makes the CPU running all the time and burn most of power down. hopefully it will be fixed.

Exactly same issue on my moto z droid. Only on year old. For past 2 months or so, the battery suddenly started drained like HELL! Cannot use the phone for more than half an hour. Cannot keep up with charging it. Still recall last November, was on a long trip and my phone worked fine. And now it's like a junk! I have to put on fight mode to save battery but it makes the phone completely useless.
DEMANDING Verizon and Motorola FIXED IT OR REPLACE OR REFUND ASAP!

I took my phone off the charger this morning and didn't touch it for an hour. When I went to use it, it was down to 73% and the only apps running were Android System, Google Play Services, and Android OS. Each was listed having 1% battery drain. The phone was very hot to the touch - you'd have thought I was streaming HD video while overclocking the CPU. I disabled the Google Play Services, which immediately lowered the temps, but made the phone unusable, so after an hour I turned it back on. Phone is now cool and battery drain seems to have moderated. Will report back at end of day with updates.

So I'm hoping you can help with this fix of disabling and re-enabling Play Services since Verizon sure isn't any help! I tried this fix and when I click disable it of course says the app will be restored to factory default. When I enable it again then I get errors saying my apps won't run unless I update Google Play services. Did you encounter this as well? Thanks in advance!! This issue is becoming ridiculous for me!

We have 3 Moto Z Droid phones just under a year old.
The last couple of weeks have been very frustrating.
All three phones are experiencing the same issues.
Unexplained rapid battery drain, weaker than normal signal strength, overheating and constantly locking up.
We have not added apps or changed our usage habits with the exception of needing to charge much more frequently.
Was there an "upgrade" lately? (I use the term upgrade loosely)
It is to the point we are strongly considering buying out and switching to another carrier.

Js70s,
Your efforts are greatly appreciated, let's get to the bottom of this once and for all. Have you recently downloaded any new applications? Has your phone been exposed to any physical/water damage? What is your current software version: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-205295/
