Moto Z Force Droid extreme battery drain since Oreo update
Looneyman
Enthusiast - Level 3

Recently, my Moto Z Force Droid finally received the long promised 8.0 Oreo update. And, like many, many others, Oreo has rendered my Z Force phone basiclly useless due to a ridiculously fast battery drain, even when the phone is sitting idle with the screen off. Just a week or so ago, before the trainwreck that is Android 8, the battery would last in standby mode for days, and would easily last an entire day of my "normal" amount of use. Now, when idle with the screen off the battery drains from 100% to 0 in less than seven hours, and if I actually try to use the phone the battery life drops to under two hours. This is unacceptable.  Personally, I think it's time for Lenovo and Verizon to step up and admit they totally messed things  up with this update, and either release a downgrade back to Android 7, or, if the rumors are true that the Oreo update did in fact damage these phones, replace all affected Moto Z Force Droids free of charge.

DIGMYSHOVEL, we are hearing the concern of you and the other customers here. We are working diligently to find a solution for all customers impacted. The latest resolution that has shown some success is performing the following in the listed order:

Please complete a Factory Data Reset, without restoring any apps, content or inserting any SD Cards into the device; followed by the recalibrating process (see below). Once both are completed test the device for 72 hours and confirm battery life with MVD.

Recalibrate the battery
Press and hold the power button until the phone reboots (10secs)
Plug phone into the OEM Turbo charger
Allow phone to charge to 100% (leave on the charger overnight).

If the behavior persists please provide screenshots of the entire Battery screen. (Settings > Battery > Usage Details)

Yeah I guess that is the downfall to these forums because I have already stated I have done the soft reboot, hard reset , and re-downloaded the 8.0 from a PC and honestly it seems worse each time. I am currently shopping Sprint and us cellular just for the fact I've been with Verizon for 17yrs, have 3 lines  and this is terrible I'm not spending $150 because the update renders my phone useless without a cord

Posting images on the forum can be completed on other devices besides a PC. The main thing is being sure to use the full desktop view of the site to have the same functionality as a PC. For example, this image was created on a tablet and inserted into the community forum from that same tablet.

Having the same problems since Oreo, phone drains in less than 3 hours when I could use it fairly heavily for calls most if the day and still have 60% with use from 500am to 800pm. I went to a Verizon corporate store and since I have insurance they sent a replacement Moto Z Force to me. I went through resetting up my device, only have a couple of essential apps, United, Marriott, Hertz and Expensify. All else that can be disabled is. Battery is in optimization mode.

Same issue with the new phone.

Having a phone that operates normally with out increased battery drain is important. I would feel the same if my device did not hold a charge like before. Let's review this more together to make sure we have tried all options. Please complete a device health check by using the following steps listed here http://spr.ly/6588DLKLp. What were you results after completing this?

My Moto is doing the same thing. No increased use, just teriible battery life. Like unbelievably terrible battery life and abysmal battery charging, likes its draining so fast the charger barely keeps up. Why should people have to go in and delete, disable, or anything else just to compensate for third very expensive device having an obvious malfunction? Verizon and Moto needs to step up and fix this... Now... Or legal action IS going to follow very soon.

I have jumped through every hoop they offered to try and spent hours on the phone (hooked to the charger of course) with Verizon and Motorola and always end up with the same answer " just $150 for a replacement" Been a verVeri customer for 17 yrs but if that is how they treat loyal customers I'm exploring Sprint or US Cellular

ANGROL82,

We understand how frustrating it can be to have trouble with your phone having a short battery life. I would be upset as well. Let's discover a few clues. Have you attempted to recalibrate your battery? Does your phone get warm at all? Are you using the charger that came with the device?\

Here are the instructions to recalibrate the battery:

Recalibrate the battery
Press and hold the power button until the phone reboots (10secs)
Plug phone into the OEM Turbocharger
Allow the phone to charge to 100% (leave on the charger overnight).

My battery was draining on standby in less than a day. I deleted some apps and cleared cache, but that didn't help. I finally resorted to factory reset, only to find that the phone came back up to initial setup and it wouldn't see the sim card and wifi is nonfunctional. I tried the sim card in another phone and it works perfectly.

What can I do about my moto z force that I can't setup to use?

Seems alot like the iPhone deal where they sent bad software and ended up getting sued

I have the same issues with a Moto Z.  I have removed third party apps, turned off BT, GPS, removed widgets, turned the new green dot notifications off and still no difference.  As far as no known issues last I checked on Lenovo/Moto customer forums there was 1275 post on this topic.  Please correct this.

We definitely want to ensure that you have the best experience on your device, J.morgan. We would like you to review our battery saving tips for your device here: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-205213/

We would also like for you to go to Setting, then tap Battery, and review what apps or system processes are using the most battery, then uninstall those apps and restart your device.

Don't say no one else has reported this issue one more time. You know darn well that's a flat out lie. Every Moto droid on my account has gone from multiple day use charging nightly to needing to be on a charger constantly because they'll drain in less tja. 2-4 hours IDLE. Of the 11 other Moto droid users I know... They ALL are experiencing this and Verizon is doing NOTHING about this other than shoving it under the rug. You want us to be quiet? Fix the darn batteries or roll back the update that is clearly causing this issue. Period! (Extremely unsatisfied customer about to cancel 8 lines of service)

Sorry but that is a terrible, canned answer because none of those things you suggested will help, and you guys know it. that's the same song that ya'll were singing almost 2 months ago after that update dropped and created havoc and much frustration and confusion for so, so many of your loyal customers. I cant believe these issues are still being denied by Verizon and the manufacturers such as Motorola and Samsung. How long will they continue to deny? This will not be forgotten...by your loyal customers

I have had the same issues with my Moto Z Force Droid since the last oreo update.  The phone freezes whenever I try to use Google maps, and the battery goes from100 to 10 percent in 3 hours. Sometimes the phone shuts down at 30% battery and won't turn on again until it is charged to at least 50%.  Prior to the update, it did not have these issues.

Verizon should allow removal of the update.

I already ran through all the usual troubleshooting steps prior to posting about this issue, including a full factory reset. Right now, with no pre-installed app updates, and no installs of any 3rd party apps, the battery drain rate has improved some, to maybe 12 - 14 hours from 100% charged to auto-shut down, but that is still a nearly 50% quicker drain rate than my pre-Android 8 experience with this phone. As this is currently a "backup" phone, that has only seen light use since I upgraded to a Pixel 2 XL a few months ago, it spends most of the time idle with the screen off, so there is little chance that the increased battery drain is being caused by any 3rd party app - there were not any apps installed beyond the stock Google/Verizon apps that came with the phone. My next step I guess will be to do another factory reset, then I'll try disabling as many of the stock apps as possible, and see what happens.
