Moto Z Force Droid extreme battery drain since Oreo update

Recently, my Moto Z Force Droid finally received the long promised 8.0 Oreo update. And, like many, many others, Oreo has rendered my Z Force phone basiclly useless due to a ridiculously fast battery drain, even when the phone is sitting idle with the screen off. Just a week or so ago, before the trainwreck that is Android 8, the battery would last in standby mode for days, and would easily last an entire day of my "normal" amount of use. Now, when idle with the screen off the battery drains from 100% to 0 in less than seven hours, and if I actually try to use the phone the battery life drops to under two hours. This is unacceptable.  Personally, I think it's time for Lenovo and Verizon to step up and admit they totally messed things  up with this update, and either release a downgrade back to Android 7, or, if the rumors are true that the Oreo update did in fact damage these phones, replace all affected Moto Z Force Droids free of charge.

Because it can take a few hours or a few days before your post reaches their attention and they are allowed to respond.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Same thing here, it usually happens near the end of a contract . I had no problems with mine until I received a text from Verizon on specials, then a text from a sales rep and same week my phone drains, no camera and no flashlight. There is a constant light on inside my phone. None of the fixes they suggest work. Also happened to my Samsung S5.  It's a conspiracy man.......

My phone does the same thing.  Has to stay on the charger at all times.  Can't take it anywhere because it shutss down  between 5 - 30 minutes.  Have tried everything that has been stated, even bought a new battery to no avail.  As like others, mine was paid off last month.  Is this a scam to get us to buy another?  If so, shame on you!  Have been a Verizon customer for 11 years and this is the first time that I have been disappointed.

I don't understand why certain issues are treated as if they are completely out of the blue.  As if some random remote anomaly is affecting the device and causing this unheard of behavior.  My Moto Z Droid was fine when I didn't update the OS, and the moment that I did, not it shuts off randomly with what appears to be plenty of battery life left and drains like a timer counting down the seconds.  If you Google the symptoms for Motorola phones and battery/firmware/OS updates, you get pages of different posts stating the same characteristics of a bad upgrade that debilitates their phone to the point of becoming a piece of useless plastic in your pocket.  The biggest problem is not knowing who is at fault because everyone seems to throw their hands up and say, "sorry not our problem, but we'll take more of your money to fix our issues!"  Just know that people have access to the internet and can research for just a few seconds until they find post after post of what is obviously a device defect, not a user one.

I'm having the exact same issue.  My phone will show 70 or 80 % battery life and will just shut down.  It won't turn on until it's plugged in, at which time it immediately shows its got 70 or 80% again.  I only get about 20-30 minutes of usage before it shuts down.  I tried all the troubleshooting.  I did the device health check, the factory reset, the disabling of all 3rd party aps.  This isn't about too much drain, it's some sort of problem with the battery itself or the opertating system reading the battery incorrectly.  My phone is only 1 year old, has no damage, and is just about useless unless its plugged in.  Please help verizon! I've been a loyal verizon customer for years and I loved the previous droid phones, but unless this issue gets fixed I'm switching phones and providers.  I've gotten no help on this issue.

Could this be a battery that needs to be replaced?

This idea surely doesn't touch the consistent timing of all of these issues, even with my own Droid, but to me, it just screams the need for a new battery.

That is what I thought but the Tech did a battery check and said it was fine.  This did not happen until after I did the update.

Updates are always meant to bring improvement to your device Looneyman. We are here and want to get this figured out. Since the factory rest have, you attempted to recalibrate the battery?

Recalibrate the battery
โ€ขPress and hold the power button until the phone reboots (10secs)
โ€ขPlug phone into the OEM Turbocharger
โ€ขAllow the phone to charge to 100% (leave on the charger overnight).

Continue to test for 72 hours after this has been done.

Hey Verizon stop referring people to battery saving tips. We have all tried them. How about I stead admitting you don't know anything about the problem and have no idea if it will be fixed. Every single Verizon Motorola phone that has been updated with your pushed ota Oreo update is having extreme battery drain. I have a Moto z play and my battery drains 20% in 4 hours while on standby. This is not acceptable.  Stop with these generic replies because that's what your computer prompt says and go report this terrible. Honestly I'm very unhappy with the fact you won't admit it's a problem. I'm in IT and work with electronics. If you can't help with this problem then close this topic!

Hello MAUNA-POI,

We are sorry to see that you have been having battery issues since the new software update launched for your Moto Z Force Droid. We know what an inconvenience it is when you are constantly running out of battery, as I too would be very frustrated with this issue. Just to clarify for you, Verizon does not launch or create these software updates, that is completely up to the phone manufacturer. Good news is that we do have a link that can help you extend your battery life, please use the following link for steps on troubleshooting a short battery life for a Moto Z Force Droid: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/motorola-moto-z-force-droid-edition-troubleshooting/#/main/d...

your response that Verizon does not launch or create these software updates is a lie and you should be fired for posting stuff like that.  the updates are pushed over the air by the carrier after they have put their spin on it.  The phone manufacturer releases the update to the carrier, the carrier adds their bloatware, then they release the ota update.  nothing but lies.  I shouldn't have to have help to extend my battery life when it was just fine before the update.  stop lying and get on the ball an help get the carrier to fix this issue.  My phone is not only branded by Motorola buy by Verizon also.  Don't put your name on a product unless you stand by it.

Do you guys even bother reading the responses before answering? It has only become an issue since the Oreo update! I quit coming to you guys because I get tired of every one of you answering the same way without you doing any research to find an actual solution. Came only because a search brought me here. I'm fed up with updates destroying phones! This is my 3rd Moto Z..the last 2 had to be replaced after an update messed them up. The first one was after having my new phone for 2 months and it got replaced with a used certified phone...and I still owed over $600 for it at the time! I love Motorola's but they don't seem to be the product they used to be. Every major update screws up Bluetooth or the battery. Please find a solution instead of the pat, script answers! When you have all if these people saying the same thing and you continue to send us to battery saving tips or wipe your phone and start over, etc. The problem is the update!!!

posies, we know how  difficult it can be to have to deal with a device that is constantly giving you issues, and we will be glad to help you get this corrected the best way possible. You also have to keep in mind that the software updates are not directly releases by Verizon, but in fact they are actually released by the manufacturer which in this case is Motorola. We are aware that several devices are having issues after the update, and for that reason our technicians are working along with the Motorola technicians to work on a new update that will be released as soon as it is ready. This way you can get your device working again without having any other issues.

I have the same problem.  However ... is this a Verizon problem?  If it is an update isn't it Motora who is the issue?  I am Not happy at all and will never buy a Motorola again because I have been going back and forth with them.

I was in a call with Verizon support and got moved to the next level tech and got no where, then he conferenced in Motorola to the call and they said the app comes from Google... Oh and I need a new phone now also because after the hard reset it but yet I told him it still has the same software that caused the issue...got nowhere after at least an hour on the phone
