Moto Z Force Droid extreme battery drain since Oreo update
Looneyman
Enthusiast - Level 3

Recently, my Moto Z Force Droid finally received the long promised 8.0 Oreo update. And, like many, many others, Oreo has rendered my Z Force phone basiclly useless due to a ridiculously fast battery drain, even when the phone is sitting idle with the screen off. Just a week or so ago, before the trainwreck that is Android 8, the battery would last in standby mode for days, and would easily last an entire day of my "normal" amount of use. Now, when idle with the screen off the battery drains from 100% to 0 in less than seven hours, and if I actually try to use the phone the battery life drops to under two hours. This is unacceptable.  Personally, I think it's time for Lenovo and Verizon to step up and admit they totally messed things  up with this update, and either release a downgrade back to Android 7, or, if the rumors are true that the Oreo update did in fact damage these phones, replace all affected Moto Z Force Droids free of charge.

Checking in as well, Phone maybe will get 6-8 hours max. Some instability issues. Used to get 21-22 hours. i am not a heavy user and loved the batter life only charging every other day or so. Have to keep the charger handy as well. IT was noticable immediately after the oreo update. Tried most everything on here after finding this. Good to know it isn't just me.

I am experiencing the exact same problems as everyone else in this thread and it also started after the Oreo update. Phone just dies with sometimes as much as 60% battery left. So I have to keep it plugged in most of the time.  Makes it pretty useless beyond 2 hours of use.

DAVMCC44,

We want to ensure your phone is working properly. We would love to look into this issue further with you. For clarification, do you also have the Moto Z Force? Is there any physical or water damage to your device?

I found this solution on another thread and it seams to have helped with the drain.

I am a bit concerned that Verizon is not aware of this as a probable cause of the drain.

1. In settings, "Apps & notifications">"App info"

a. Find AppFlash. This is a Verizon addon to the Oreo Upgrade. (Odd they did not tell us this!!) Clear data, clear cache then disable

b. Find Google Play Services. "Storage">Clear Cache. Then "Data Usage" Disable Background data.

c. You might also want to look at some other apps and also disable "background data"

It took me a day and a lot of time on the charger before the battery life came back to a more normal drain. I am still not sure it is as good as it used to be.

Hope this helps and if so spread the word to the Moto Community.

Regards

I tried this and no luck.  I have done all the resets, all the battery calibrations, everything..   My phone is now shutting down when it hits 70%.  This is not what I paid for.  My phone still has a couple months to be paid off so unless I pay to upgrade, I am out of luck with a phone that basically has to be plugged in all the time.

SOFTWIND14, I would be feeling the same way if my phone wasn't performing as it should. We do want to assist and find a resolution for you. You did a lot of troubleshooting there, but there's one more thing we would want to check. Did you run your phone in Safe Mode as well? If so, what happened with the battery life while in Safe Mode?

Yes, I have a Moto Z Force Droid phone.  There is no physical or water damage to it.

We are glad to hear the phone is in good physical shape and do want it working smoothly again. When going to your Apps, Settings, Apps & Notifications, App Info, do you find App Flash? If so, please select this to clear the cache and data. When going to Google Play, have you ensured that your apps are all up to date?

My battery drain issues really took a turn for the worse after I updated on November 13, 2018 with the Security Update. I went to the Verizon Store and they are worthless. So now I am here and it appears to be the same problem!

No one is going to own up to this problem!!!

i uninstalled appflash a few days ago.  Battery actually got worse (from shutting down at 50% to now shutting down at 70%).  Safe mode doesn't change anything, still runs down super quick.

SOFTWIND14, having a fully functioning phone is essential. It is unfortunate that after uninstalling Appflash, the battery life has gotten worse. Thank you for trying safe mode, the next steps in troubleshooting would be to factory data reset the phone (http://spr.ly/6587E1loZ). Please ensure the phone is backed up before completing this step as we don't want you to lose your data. Also, please disable the automatic restore option for your applications.

Like so many others, the battery on my Moto Z Droid is almost useless, since it will drain to zero within hours even with no activity on the phone or its apps.  The phone is not damaged and has never been wet.  The battery issue began after the update to Android Oreo 8.0. At first I thought it would be a simple solution by installing a new battery (no can do).  The prior threads have all supported the same issue = OS Oreo update caused the battery problem.  How can Verizon and/or Google help get my Moto Z back to normal, expected battery life?

Getting your device battery working as expected is a must erasanen. We are all eagerly all trying to get this figured out. Have you tried to recalibrate your battery?

Re-calibrate the battery

Press and hold the power button until the phone reboots (10secs)

Plug phone into the OEM Turbo charger

Allow phone to charge to 100% (leave on the charger overnight).

If the behavior persists please provide screenshots of the entire Battery screen. (Settings > Battery > Usage Details)

Ok, now I'm angry. There is nothing but lip service from Verizon on

this issue.

Two people have promised to call me back, none received. The phone is

sporadic when it comes to staying powered.

There are "lemon laws" for new cars. I'm thinking a class action lawsuit

with the concept of "lemon laws" for mobile devices should now be pursued.

Verizon, Motorola, and Lenovo should be much more concerned with their

reputation at this point.

Today it shut off at 91%. It is now a worthless phone that I still owe on.  This is unacceptable.

Update...  Did a factory reset, uninstalled AppFlash, and made it to 77% before it shut down.

SOFTWIND14, May I ask, have you attempted to use a different charger/outlet? Is there any physical damage to the device?

No there is no damage to the phone.    I have tried other outlets and chargers.  I have 3 turbo chargers that I have to keep on hand because I cannot go anywhere without one.
