I want to buy a Xoom, but I don't want another data plan, I already have a Droid and I think it would overkill to have two devices with data plans, not to mention waste of money. Can I purchase and run one without a data plan?

If you pay the $799 there is no data package required and no activation fee
Now one thing to keep in mind is that with a tablet you are going to want to do more things with that device than you do your phone. Like stream netflix for instance, or watch hulu on the go and things of that nature.. Just because you have a data package for your phone doesn't mean that you won't want one for your tab

TB is correct, I purchased mine without a data plan, and it works just fine on wifi only.

Same here, I paid the full price for mine. I may add data in the future but knowing how fast they run out I'll have to be careful with it.

Here's another thought I just had...I could upgrade my Motorola Droid (1) to a Xoom for $599 and get a 5 GB data plan for $50 per month. I would then use my RAZR, which is still enabled on my primary phone number, as my cell phone. This would allow me to get rid on my $30 unlimited data plan for the Droid and I would also stop using my USB760 which, at this point, only cost me $2 per day when I activate it. It just seems to me, having a Xoom without a data plan for it might be defeating the purpose of having it. The main problem with this idea is I would lose my texting capability. I guess I could upgrade the RAZR to another simple phone with texting capability.

If you get the 3G version of Xoom now, the Motorola site says that you can send your 3G in and get it upgraded to 4G for free when it is released!
