Motorola Xoom DAta plan?

I want to buy a Xoom, but I don't want another data plan, I already have a Droid and I think it would overkill to have two devices with data plans, not to mention waste of money. Can I purchase and run one without a data plan?

If you pay the $799 there is no data package required and no activation fee

Now one thing to keep in mind is that with a tablet you are going to want to do more things with that device than you do your phone. Like stream netflix for instance, or watch hulu on the go and things of that nature.. Just because you have a data package for your phone doesn't mean that you won't want one for your tab

But if you do want to stream netflix etc., watch out for overages, as they don't come cheap.

TB is correct, I purchased mine without a data plan, and it works just fine on wifi only.

Same here, I paid the full price for mine. I may add data in the future but knowing how fast they run out I'll have to be careful with it.

I have a USB760 with a 5GB data plan and a CradlePoint portable router. If I buy a Xoom, I may just pay full price for WIFI only and use my USB760 when I need a 3G connection, such is in the car, etc. Has anyone tried tethering a Droid to the Xoom?

Yes i've teathered my Xoom from a Droid. No obvious problems noted.

Here's another thought I just had...I could upgrade my Motorola Droid (1) to a Xoom for $599 and get a 5 GB data plan for $50 per month. I would then use my RAZR, which is still enabled on my primary phone number, as my cell phone. This would allow me to get rid on my $30 unlimited data plan for the Droid and I would also stop using my USB760 which, at this point, only cost me $2 per day when I activate it. It just seems to me, having a Xoom without a data plan for it might be defeating the purpose of having it. The main problem with this idea is I would lose my texting capability. I guess I could upgrade the RAZR to another simple phone with texting capability.

If I can resist the urge to get a Xoom now, I should probably wait a few months until the 4G is in place. Then, upgrade my USB760 to a Xoom with a 5GB data plan for $50. Then, with my Droid contract is up next January, decide if I still need/want a smartphone or not.

If you get the 3G version of Xoom now, the Motorola site says that you can send your 3G in and get it upgraded to 4G for free when it is released!

Well I like the Xoom, but I do know if verizon backs out of their unlimite data plan, they broke contract with me and my 4 phones are gone, and they may not miss these 4 smartphones charges, but from what I read there are a whole lot more going too,so Verizon you need to think twice
