Preventing ICS update ?

How does one stop this ?

VZW Customer Service says its not possible.

I do not want it....or the associated headaches that invariably come from a complete O/S change.

My phone works fine now, I know where everything is and how to use it, and do not want to change that.

I did a Cache Wipe which has stopped the 'Install Update' prompt for now, but assume its only a matter of time until it returns...and eventually will force the so-called 'upgrade'...

I find it aggravating that we're being forced to 'update' with no Opt Out provisions....

TIA

I think you can keep "ignoring" it forever or until you go insane from having to ignore it...whichever comes first.

There should be a "refined" version or a patch for the existing version sometime in August(or so I hear)

Thanks SO...

According to both VZW CS (on phone) and the people at the local VZW store, the 'update' will eventually force its way in.

The store guy said that typically the 'Install Later' time window will be reduced until you miss a prompt at 2:30 AM and it installs. (Although he did says that it checks battery level prior to starting....so keep it at a low level and do not charge at night!)

There really needs to be an Opt Out selection for those of us who see no benefit to this massive change and do not want to invest hour$ of our time cleaning up afterwards....

As it is, I've already spent valuable time trying to figure out how to stop it.

Aside from potential technical/functionality issues, there's the matter of the (re)learning curve as you slowly discover all of the things they changed, deleted, omitted, etc....

This is really for Verizon's convenience, they want everyone using model X to be on the same release, so support is (theoretically) easier.  Even if they didn't do this, I'm sure the first time you encounter a problem, you would be told (after trying a factory reset!) to upgrade.

Did you use Google?

If you wanted to bite the bullet and save some stress and hair - do a cache wipe and an FDR then let it go, Before doing so, look for my posts on doing this without an app/data restore, it is hugely important in some(most??) cases that the "old" data from GB does not creep into ICS.

I don't think you'll be displeased. users that have done those two things seem to be humming along....and tripping over the learning curve.

IMHO - and I've been using smartphones since 04-05 and a 'Droidian since the OG Droid days, this is the best OS yet. Are there bugs? As the Alaskan nitwit would say: 'You betchya' but there are always going to be, it's life in the fast lane now.

has posted some great links to tips and tricks to help take the apex out of the curve.

My Maxx runs better than it ever has and many times better than the Razr that proceeded it. Also, as I mentioned, there is an update in the works...but no official acknowledgement of it nor a timeline for release.

Yes, I think this certainly helps remove many of the issues that people experience.  The remainder might be caused by apps that haven't been updated, which is why some suggest manually restoring the apps one by one, and finding which causes an issue.

But... there may still be something else going on: EVERY update on EVERY phone creates comments "Best thing ever"/"This totally broke my phone", and not every happy person did a cache wipe and not every sad person didn't!

Very good points silver6056 and yes, I am going to go edit my reply to reflect the manual app restore...that is a HUGE part of it...

Yes. But all permanent solutions involve rooting, ROMs, downloading (& paying for) various utilities, etc... which I am unfamiliar with. A simple Opt Out would be preferable.

At the expense of mine...The Customer.

My MAXX runs fine now. I have no issues at all (OK...I had one force close a few months ago from some garbage game that my son snuck onto it). It does everything I need it to and I know how to do it.

I've had smartphones since ~ 05-06....and have been thru some disastrous OTA updates. When you figure the hour$ spent recovering, its rediculous.

As far as the Cache Wipe, OK...I've done that. But, doing a complete FDR will wipe out a huge amount of data (Contacts, Settings, Cfg's, Preferences, etc...). I can backup little things like pics & such to the SD card (& therefore on to a PC), but there is nothing I've found that will cover everything else. I have a ton of contacts that exist nowhere but on the phone....on purpose. The cloud soultions (Google, VZ whatever, etc) are not an option as there are confidentiality/security aspects.

Use My Backup Pro for your contacts etc. There are both paid and free versions with different capabilities, it's what I've used since OG Droid.
You want to re-configure the settings, in some cases they are part of the problem. This update isn'tlike going from Win95 to Win98, this is more like going from 95 to Win7 - HUGE upgrade.

BackUp Pro looks promising...although its untested (for me) and there is a cost factor. At this point I'll just keep trying to delay the O/S change as long as I can. If its forced on me, and it requires purchase of utility software to correct issues caused by the O/S change, I will fight that out with VZW.....

Again, I find it unconscionable that VZW will not allow an Opt Out and will eventually force the O/S change on us.

Imagine if it was that was in other aspects of life....

Imagine one morning that many features on your new car no longer work correctly and the controls have all been rearranged due to the mfgr sneaking in overnight and performing an 'update'......BUT, you can fix most issues they caused by buying some new tools and spending time to learn repair procedures.

We wouldn't tolerate it.

At least Microsoft gives you the option of not installing updates and/or upgrading....

Yes, I wasn't implying otherwise, I meant "purely for Verizon's convenience" which is why they do it and don't provide an opt out (which I agree they should).
