For the third time, after putting my phone in vibrate mode, now the area for Ring volume is greyed out and is not usable. Anyone have this problem?

Let's work together to make sure your concern is fully addressed. Once you turn vibrate off, does the ringer volume control return? If so, that just means the device is functioning as intended.
