Security & Privacy identified Shell 4.4.4-5 as a medium threat risk.

How should I proceed?  The app cannot be disabled, but can be force stopped.  I believe it's an Android program, however, and I suspect force stopping it would be a problem.

I have the same problem and this Medium threat risk keeps saying the com.android.shell Version 4.4.4.5 is suspicious and it can:

- Incur premium charges

- Damage or encrypt files for ransom

- Monitor the device and observe my activities

- Take advantage of vulnerabilities to access and use my data

- Send junk messages or emails from the device

- Direct the user to a fake website to get account informatin

- Result in excessive battery/bandwith drainage.

And the truth the battery is starting to act up being discharged very quickly and increasing the temperature of the phone.

I am sorry but I am not comfortable with the slow and ambiguous answer from Verizon or mcaffee

Keeping the file disable the warning but still users have not got a confirmation if this is a false positive or if in fact our devices are infected and so far it has been suggested a workaround to avoid the symptom. Please be clearer as you do when you send our bills whether if it is Holiday, 4th of July or not!

Where are you getting the alert for the medium thread risk?

I'm having the same problem - in the Verizon Security & Privacy app, I'm getting an alert for a medium threat risk in Shell Version 4.4.4-5, Package Name com.android.shell, Detection name: Artemis!b706fc298ffe. I've forced the app to stop running, but the threat is still showing up in the Security & Privacy app. I haven't downloaded any new apps recently.

mseymou1, getting threat alerts can always be concerning, especially since we want to protect our personal information. We want to get to the bottom of this. You mentioned you have not downloaded any new apps but what about your current third party apps (what is the list of apps you have downloaded previously). Aside from force stopping the app, any other actions you have performed in effort to fix the issue?

Hey Verizon guys,

I would suggest that you read the ENTIRE thread before posting. If you did you would find out that we customers have figured out what to do to stop the alerts and stop the app. One very wise and patient customer spent over 2 hours on the phone with your tech support and posted their answer. This app runs on only 36k so it can't be that important, I don't know what it does but it's been shut off on my Droid Maxx for about a week and it has not effected my phone. No virus people, just a false positive. It's not like a computer virus that sets your hair on fire. FYI I read my newspapers on my phone, shop on Amazon, eBay and Etsy. I listen to the radio and podcasts and I watch tv on Optimum. None of these have been effected.

I don't do Facebook or social media which is much worse than this issue for invading your devices. Calm down, shut it off and wait for a patch. Now I'm off to see Ant Man, have a good weekend.

Warm greetings good people. I too have received the same threat notifications...first while on the East coast earlier in June (then they ceased for several days) and now again in Texas. I say this because I am out of town and thought I truly had picked up a real threat via some unsecure wifi connection.

After spending 2 hours speaking with 1st level Verizon tech support and tier 2 tech expert, Brian in Little Rock, Brian's conclusion is there was probably a software glitch which went undetected at the time of testing for the most recent Security & Privacy update. Verizon rolled out the update and we are very probably now seeing this glitch in the form of a false positive threat detection notification. Again...the medium threat notification following malware scans may show a false positive resulting from a recent software update glitch.

Brian has notified the appropriate Verizon evaluation team requesting further testing. After identifying the bad code, they should be able to rectify the problem relatively soon. He did mention that we have our Independence Day holiday coming up, so patience may be required.

Rest assured, Brian ranrthe gauntlet on this with me and I am confident that I am going to do Nothing to my Droid Maxx for now. You may choose to do what you wish... although there is really nothing one can do until the glitch is located and solved.

Happy Forth of July to all of you Good people!

Hi Brad,

Thank you so very much for all of the time and effort that you put into finding the answer about this issue. I sincerely appreciate it, talking with Verizon would try a stone's patience and I certainly don't have the patience! I figured it was nothing important which was why I posted how to stop the notifications and force stop the app. Thanks again and have a Happy 4th!

Thanks for the tip but for me, oddly enough, neither force stop nor disable are highlighted, so to speak, neither are clickable.  For now all I can do is ignore the notifications.

Choose KEEP it will stop the notifications mine were coming from McAfee. Read my previous posts to see how to force stop. I have a Droid Maxx if that makes a difference for you.

I'm getting the same notification re Shell Version 4.4.4-5 Detection name: Artemis!b706fc298ffe

I have disabled it...via Force Stop. My phone seems to be running fine. But, I am still getting the notifications.

Verizon, please advise if this is an actual threat and how to proceed.

To Verizon: I don't do Twitter so you have to respond here.

To others having this issue: my phone works perfectly fine with the Shell forced stop. I don't know what it does but not using it is better than a virus. Read my prior posts to see what I did to handle the issue. McAfee gave me no option for removal because it is a factory installed app. If any issues appear with the app stopped I promise to post ASAP. It seems that for now we are on our own. Good Luck and have a great holiday.

I know how it feels to have seemingly random items pop up as notifications that they are potential threats, GARFRE28. I’ve reviewed the comments here and assure you we’re on the right path forward. The issue has been raised to the software developers to be addressed in the next software update (see BPSGROUP’s post, #25 in this thread). In the meantime, you can follow bqCathy’s recommendation and force stop the app. When it comes to force stopping, I understand your hesitation since it’s a system app. I’ve found that keeping track of which app I disable, then monitoring the phone’s behavior, is the best bet. I’ve never had an issue disabling a system app as long as it’s one at a time. I hope this information helps resolve your concern and that of others raised in this thread.

I'm having the same problem.  Warning pops up as soon as my android boots up. I select "Disable", yet I continue to get up-dated warnings.

Verizon ... as said above, please provide correctable guidance.  This is obviously a systemic problem due to the number of people experiencing it!
