I have an update available, but I don't know if I can upgrade my phone because the screen is shattered. Does anyone know, or will I have to use the insurance?

Is the phone on Edge or contract? If it's contract, you can upgrade when you get out of contract. If it is an Edge phone, it will have to be repaired before you can trade it in.

I thought that you had the option to keep your old phone when you upgrade, so I wasn't sure if it would matter that the screen is shattered. I believe that it is an Edge phone.

If it is Edge, you can keep the phone and pay it off, but you cannot trade in a broken phone.

Can I keep it even if it is under contract? Thank you by the way.

If it's under contract you can keep it, but Edge phones are not under contract. Those are under device agreements.
