Verizon Messages app help

I am trying the Verizon Messages app instead of the stock texting app that came with the Maxx because I dislike the plain white background and the app doesn't allow you to change background colors. I'm noticing that I only receive status bar notifications and no notification overtop of the text icon. Like with the stock app, it would have a 4 if I had 4 text messages, But with the Verizon Messages, there's no number. Is there any way to change that so I have a number?

There is in settings.  I no longer use the app myself, but there is a notification setting, perhaps it was in Advanced Settings.  I know my VM+ icon on my homescreen would have a red solid circle and a white number in it.

I'm only seeing status bar notifications. I took 2 screen shots to give an example. You can see there's still the number on my stock text app, but not for VM+ even though VM is set as default app.

That is quite odd, odder still is that you have service at all over there in that area of the county.  I installed the app again, just to see.  I did not have to modify any settings to get the notification number to show on any icon.  Just installed, sent myself a message, popped up in the notification area and "1" popped up over the shortcut icon on my homescreen and in the app drawer.  I do know that I have had to set Phone Admin and Notification access options in settings-security to allow some apps more control over the phone.  I use an LG G2 however.

Tried the Google Messenger as well, and that does the same thing too. Status bar notifications only. I don't know what the problem is or who to contact for help on this.

It might be because you have Active Notifications (lockscreen lights up)  unlike other phones and perhaps notification #s aren't used at all.

Yes, either way, I prefer any stock app over the VM+ app.

I understand  you prefer not to use the stock messaging app, but can you place the phone in Safe Mode http://bit.ly/OJWrbo, send a message to yourself and let me know if the stock message shows the notification?

Yes, a number appears over the stock messenger. Another Verizon rep. told me that VM+ just doesn't show a number on Motorola phones. Which is really becoming a hassle.

I have a Motorola phone, and I see the same behavior.  I have to actually open the VM+ app to see the count of unread messages.  Once I do open the app, I can see unread - but nothing shows on the tray icon, or notifications if I have already pulled down to view them...

It works as intended on the Motorola I've used.

I don't think I've ever seen a number on the VM+ app like that...only in the message list as in the screenshot above.  VM+ is set as my default text app - did you disable the stock app?  What's your secret??  Smiley Happy

When I saw the OP's post, I've tried to determine the 'secret' and I don't know what it is.  I switch between VM and the stock text app without disabling the one not being used.  There isn't a setting that I've found to make it happen.  I have Message+ checked to display in Moto Display, but I don't think that's the secret.  If I figure anything out, I'll post it.

I have VM+ selected, and the stock app unchecked in Moto display also, so that's not it.  I rarely switch between the two, and use VM+ exclusively.

I stopped using VM+ due to its data use.  I had originally thought that VM was just a stock replacement that could send MMS over wifi, but I was wrong.  My bill reflected a somewhat large increase in data and a much lower total of messages the next month.

I know that My Motos have to disable one app to set the other as default.

Ok, I went onto the Android forums and got a answer. Unfortunately for Motorola users, only the default text app will show the number notification. There is a app called Nova Launcher Prime which is $4 you can get along with the Nova Launcher badge app that will show numbers above your applications for any unread messages. What sucks even more is I have to wait 2 years with Verizon in order to get another phone. This is kind of a deal breaker for me.
