What happens to our data plan when we get the 4G upgrade?

According to the information posted by VZW in Q7 at this link:

4 G upgrade

7.  Do I have to change my plan once I upgrade my Motorola Xoom™ to 4G LTE™?

No, you will not have to change your plan when the 4G LTE upgrade is complete.

I assumed this means that we get the same plan we are on but the speed is 4G.

On the motorola forum someone posted that this means:

"VZW tells me once the Xoom is upgraded to 4G, we will be shifted to the $50 4G plan anyway. Or I could choose to keep it as a 3G device on the $35 plan."

Thank you everyone for your input on this discussion. At this time, we have no pricing options available for tablets using the 4G network for data. Once made available, you will be able to find it here on verizonwireless.com.

Thanks,

Nobody knows the answer until Verizon announces it.

There's a bit more to the 4G upgrade story than the previous 2 comments.

Xoom 3G owners do have some expectations based on how VZW explained the 4G transition would work.  If you read the FAQ in the link of my original post [these FAQ's were available on the first day the Xoom was released] you are given "promises."

The FAQ 4G upgrade "promises" are somewhat confusing and have lead to differing interpretations.  But it is incorrect to say there is no interpretation at all.

Let me tell you my interpretation of what these "promises" are:

Today the 4G data packages are $50/5G and $80/10G for VZW modems, that's it.

To get 4G your Xoom needs hardware [that's free] and a SIM [you pay].  The SIM will have its own telephone number and you will need to purchase it from VZW and when you do you will select a data plan.  Today there are only 2 data plan choices.

It's becoming very clear you will pay more for 4G.  Don't want to pay more then keep your existing 3G connection because it has its own telephone number and the hardware is already in the Xoom.  You get the 4G second piece of hardware free which is all VZW has said.

Think that VZW is going to create new data plans?  TBD but OP in the top post I made says that's not his what he's been told.

The only thing that you know for sure is the Xoom will be upgradable to 4G. Future plans for 3G or 4G have not been announced. Speculation at this time is only that.

You are, of course, expressing an opinion.  As am I.

No, this is a fact. Unless you have an official announcement from Verizon, it's speculation.

OK, my interpretation of the promises are my opinion [see def of "opinion"].  There ya go.

I am unsure of why you are interpreting that "It's becoming very clear you will pay more for 4G".

If you look at 3G modems, I believe that the price for data was $60 for 5GB. With 4G modems, the price was DROPPED to $50 for 5GB. How does that make it very clear that you will pay more for 4G data on a cellphone. They MAY move to tiered plans, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you will be paying more.

If they move to a tiered data plan for 4G handsets(similar to AT&T), say $25 for 2GB and let's even say $50 for 5GB like the modems(but I seriously doubt this will be the case), I'm guessing that will more than cover the majority of users(it will cover me, at least). In this case, I will be paying LESS for 4G data, as I barely make it over 1GB/month of data on my phone.

Why I think I will pay more for 4G service.  Let me tell you my assumptions.

Assume that I bought the Xoom for $599 and committed to a 2 year 3G data plan at the time of purchase.  I did and I'm under contract.  1G/$20 month.  My plan is locked to my 3G Xoom modem which is identified with its own telephone number on my VZW billing page.  I also have a VZW VL600 4G modem [not in the Xoom] and it is also identified with its own telephone number on this same billing page.

I think I will pay more because I will need a 4G SIM card to use the 4G modem in the Xoom.  If the 4G SIM card is like the one for the VL600, or other 4G modems, it is only available with 2 data plans.  There is no month to month pay as you go plan available.

After the upgrade I will have two modems in my Xoom.

I think VZW will simply say:  You want to use 4G here are two plans we offer take it or leave it. We gave you the 4G hardware for free, if you want 4G access with our free modem, you must pay to use it.  Don't like that deal, fine, continue to use your existing 3G plan.

We don't know if VZW will say they will credit my existing 3G contract towards a 4G contract.  If they did its my opinion that it would be limited to the two existing 4G data plans they now offer.

You may be thinking that VZW will let you pay as you go if you purchase a SIM for your 4G modem.  I don't think I would conclude that from the FAQ's I referenced.  Could be, but the 4G SIM has only two data plans now and no month to month pay as you go option.

One other ancillary point.  I have been told my 4G SIM from the VL600 can be placed into my Xoom after the upgrade and I will have 4G access.  If this is true then I'll move the SIM betweenthe Xoom and the VL600 so I can take advantage of the 4G plan [5G/$50] I have.

Could be I'm wrong but I'm just giving my opinion based on how I interpret the information in the FAQ I referenced in my first post.  As I have said reasonable people may have differing opinions on what the 4G upgrade means.
