Why do I only see a black screen when I try to use my camera?

The camera on my droid maxx quit working.  I only have a black screen.  Can anyone help me?

Hold vol up and power until it turns off retry. I'm app mgr force stop clear data in app mgr. Retry. Load Google camera to see if it's the hardware troubles
