Xoom As Hotspot

I think I probably know the answer to this, but can the Xoom act as a 3G/4G hotspot or be tethered to a laptop?

Hello,

Thank you mnpphoto for providing an answer to the Xoom Hotspot question. It is very much appreciated. If you currently subscribe to one of our data features, then the Mobile Hotspot functionality should be working.  Please follow the steps outlined below:

Activate Your Mobile Hotspot
You can set up your tablet as a Wi-Fi hotspot to provide portable, convenient internet access to other Wi-Fi enabled devices.
■ Select Settings from the Apps tray.
■ Touch Wireless & networks
■ Touch Tethering & portable hotspot Touch Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings
■ Configure Wi-Fi hotspot.
■ Touch a setting to modify it:
■ Network SSID: Enter a unique name for your hotspot and touch next.
■ Security: Select the type of security you want, and touch Save.
■ Enter a unique password.
■ Touch Save when the settings are complete.
■ Other users can access your Wi-Fi hotspot only if they have the correct password or if you have the security set to Open.

KellyW_VZW,

I do not understand your answer. Perhaps the content on the pricing page changed since you made the post to this topic, but I did not see anything about adding a Hotspot option. I also don't recall being offered a hotspot option when I purchased my Xoom on contract.

As you suggested, if I tap "Settings" | "Wireless & networks" | "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot"  is available to turn on. I don't currently have a device handy to test with to see if this is working but it looks like it is supposed to be. Did I miss something?

That's because their "hotspot feature" advise applies to phones, not tablets. Tablets have it built into your plan, it'll use the same allowance as your tablet uses, and it doesn't cost anything extra.

... and I'm QUITE surprised VZ neither removed, charged for nor crippled the HS feature! Wonder how long it will last?

Why should they? With a tablet, you're already paying $50 or $80 for 5 GB or 10 GB of computer data. They don't care if you're using it on your Xoom or your computer. It's a totally different situation than tethering a smartphone with unlimited data for $29.99.

Does the bluetooth tethering on Honeycomb work or not? I still wish they would include hotspot feature on smatrtphones as part of data plan too. As well as consistent data pricing for tablets, notebooks, mifi's and modems. Shouldn't matter what dervice you use, pricing should be consistent and non-discriminatory.

Not really. Computers use much more data much quicker than a smartphone. Therefore, they don't have unlimited data plans for computer devices and charge more for the data. That makes perfect sense to me.

Jim, I think that the other poster was suggesting consistent data pricing among the same types of devices, such as between the XOOM and the iPad. Currently, there is no parity between the two tablets. I am shouting from the rooftops for this to change.
