I have the same problem. My "Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped" notifications are driving me crazy. I have gotten 3 in the past couple minutes. I have texts that I am not receiving. I have text that are not being delivered. I am using the stock Messenger, the one with the green icon. I have also tried the Verizon Messenger and hello SMS apps with no change. I have read through the instructions that have been given to others and cleared the cache and performed factory resets with no results. It seems to me that there is a definite software issue since a lot of people with Droid Ultra and Maxx devices are having the same issues. Currently my device is completely undependable since I know for a fact I have missed texts and had many undelivered. What is Verizon doing to correct this issue?

Have you tried using Hangouts? It is supposed to be the replacement for the stock messaging application. I would take it for a spin and see if you can send and receive again. If so, you can always disable the stock messaging as I have. I've had no messaging crash notifications and no SMS/MMS problems either.

Yes, I gave Hangouts a whirl and it was very disappointing. It is one of those messenger apps that requires all the users that you are texting to be using the app. I am not into that. I am currently using one that is more like the original app called "8sms (Stock Messaging,KitKat)" by THINKLEFT. I also disabled the original Messenger and unchecked the notification box. So, I havent heard a peep from it since I installed this most recent one. I think there is just a bug in the 19.6.3 update that jacks up the original messenger. I think if we disable and uncheck notifications we can use most any we want without issues.

MtnMan5150 It was formerly the case that Hangouts only handled chatting but has been changed for quite a while. Google has rolled SMS and the chatting into the same application now. I would take it for another run to see if if works for you now.
elund34 Check whether your default messaging application has changed. It may just be that you are trying to use an app that is not set to be handling it completely.. Settings > Wireless & Networks - More... > Default SMS app

The only SMS app I have on my phone is the standard green icon and that is the only app under the default messaging tab in which to choose. So there must be something else that has either highjacked my messaging or there is a bug in the programming.

We'll get to the bottom of this and get the messaging corrected elund34! Motorola has recommended deleting all the messages from the app in effort to correct the issue. Keep us posted!

When I delete a conversation thread. The contact name goes to the bottom of the conversations list and the date goes to Dec 31, 1969. There are no messages in the thread either, when you open the conversation the thread disappears. Not sure if this helps give a clue to the tech support people or not.

I have a droid Maxx and have the same issue. Sometimes it just pops up while when I'm not using the factory text messaging. Says " unfortunately messaging has stopped working". I tried all the resets and clear cache and took to Verizon. They sent me a replacement phone and it does the same thing. It needs to be corrected cause who can really tell how many texts I have missed and how many have not been sent. I'm not going to use "hangouts" or some other SMS messenger because Verizon or Motorola can't fix or solve a flawed program that they themselves created.

Hello elund34,
That's quite an odd problem, that it's changing the date on you! Have you cleared your messaging cache & data as well? Are you using the stock messaging app, or a third party app?
Thank you,

elund34,
Great thanks for the update, let's get these messages back up and flowing again. Try this: settings, apps, messaging app, force stop, clear data and clear cache. Please keep us posted on this.

I have gone previously to force stop and clear data and cache with no change to the messaging app status. I have even tried this with a power cycle and nothing else changed.

Thank you for your continued efforts! Were you able to delete all messages from the phone and retest your experience? If this does not improve, can you try a Factory Reset? http://vz.to/1oTEisw

I have deleted all the text messages off of my phone and it made no difference. I have not done a factory reset and will not do it unless it is a proven solution to fixing this problem (which it isn't, because multiple people on here have done so and they are still having problems). Is Verizon and Motorola working on fixing this or is the best Verizon will do is just keep sending out random suggestions and things to try and hope that an unhappy customer will just go away?!

Hello elund34!
We strive to find a resolution for you! I'm so sorry that this is happening. I researched the issue in the references I have, and I do show that a master reset resolves the issue.
If you do not want to complete a master reset, you have the option of downloading a messaging application from the Google Play Store. However, I would recommend following the steps in the link we provided and complete the master reset on the device.
Thanks so much!

I've seen chatter on here that Motorola released an update and it is causing a lot of messaging/texting problems, including missed texts and the message "messaging has stopped." I have the message pop up ("messaging has stopped") and I have missed numerous texts (where did they go?) from at least 8 different people in the last week.
What is happening?

apollo1912,
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with messaging. Let's see if we can get that working for you. Reset the Messaging app: http://vz.to/1nfLfYq . Power the device off and back on. Retest and let us know how it's working.

Clearly this "fix" does not work! Maybe someone should fix the problem! If Verizon/Motorola will not fix the problem then I expect you to replace this worthless phone.

I did try this already...it didn't work. That's why I realized there was a problem with the defauly "Messaging" app and downloaded a different one. No problems yet. Clearly, it's an issue with the software/hardware update.
