Check the settings for whatever texting app you are using. In Messages +, it's in the application settings, there's a checkbox for "Display notifications in the status bar". (Open Messaging, tap the three bars in the top LEFT corner of the screen, scroll down to settings...) I would assume that the stock texting app has similar settings.
