when i make a call with google now the speaker phone will not go on

i would first like to say that do have the activate speaker phone in the Google now settings menu. i mean it defeats the purpose of the whole

hands free thing when i have to reach over and push the speaker phone icon. does anyone know of a solution for this. thanks
