They have no incentive to make it to work with Roku as it means you could drop their STB not even paying for a Cablecard.

Yes they do. But I believe there is a fee to use it.

there is no fee and there is no limit to how many you connect. The only constraint is that it must be connected to an XFINITY internet connection.

According to xfinity FAQ, there is no charge during beta phase.
Once beta phase is over, there will be a charge.

Defending the fact that Verizon does not have an app for the Roku because it means loss of revenue is totaly missing the fact that Verizon is losing customers (hello...) to Comcast who does.
To say that Comcast will at some point charge for this app is based on what, Verizon business policies? Even then, the benefit to all of us who use a device to manage access to a multitude of other services, to include access to our cable services, will in my opinion always pay for itself. AND, does anyone else have issues with cable service to our rooms that were built for the old cable service? Doesn't WIFI access make much more sense?
Come on!

Xfinity charge is based on FAQ that says no charge during beta. But will be later.
Verizon has 1/5 of the customers of xfinity. There is a cost to develop and support an app. More customers makes it more cost effective to support.
Verizon just spent a ton of money on developing new WiFi based stb for new IP based TV service. For some reason it was shelved. Just shows how hard it is to develop and launch a product.

Actually WiFi does not make better sense. It is slower that direct connect. And just because an app is provided by one company (Comcast) versus Verizon Fios means nothing. People are just not going to jump from Verizon because of a Roku app.
They are going to bring teasers to customers to attract business and most will see that because of a gimmicks the companies will lose customers based on prices rising and not because of a app.

The wifi option was just part of the IPTV service Verizon was planning. I suspect they spent quite a bundle on the plan before they suddenly decided to cancel it.

This is why we want a FIOS app on ROKU: We are a 2 TV household. When we had Spectrum, we connected our newer smart flatscreen to the DVR and our not smart flatscreen directly to a CATV cable. Then Spectrum stopped the CATV cable direct feeds and required that we get a box (free the first year). But the Spectrum app was available on ROKU. It took three trips to Walmart to buy a ROKU stick because everyone else in our area wanted one too instead of the box. We switched to FIOS and want the same convenience of being able to log into our FIOS account on a ROKU app so we can watch cable shows on our not smart TV. Verizon FIOS is the one who's losing out here because we stream network shows through Hulu on our older TV so FIOS is losing customer "views."

If needed can't Fios just charge a fee to use a Fios Tv Roku app?

Yes they could. But the reason people want an app like roku is so they don't have to pay for stb. It costs money to develop and maintain an app. It becomes a tradeoff to charge enough to cover all those costs but still be low enough for people to chose app vs stb.

Can’t charge half the price of a regular stb rental fee if needed?

i'd pay for it. if it means i can return my stb, i dont mind paying the premium for the streaming service. in the long run it will cost them less because of the un-needed hardware. and they can make up the revenue with the fee. for the consumer it should even out because of lack of equipment rental fees, etc...

I’m not sure what the one downer on this post is getting at defending Verizon on this. I can tell you flat out that the only reason I still consider going back to Comcast is because of the lack of this app. Paying $12 a month for a cable box is such an outdated idea for one. The Xfinity stream app is by far their most popular selling point (look it up, it’s EXACTLY what people want). And I see Verizon just released yet another app called freaking Stream TV so people can watch freaking YouTube TV...dumbest thing EVER. There’s an app for that, it’s called YOUTUBE.
On another note, I’m also not sure where you heard they charge $2.86 per app...I know many that are still not paying anything.
And on another note, IP TV was never “shelved,” it was flat out cancelled then and there.
And another note, YES, you very much CAN watch OnDemand content in the Xfinity Stream app.
And finally, there would be no additional funding needed to support any new app because they already freaking have the app...it’s called Fios TV and it could very simply be added to the additional app stores and developed just a tad further.
Enjoyed your attempts at making a solid case on Verizon’s half though. Valiant effort.

I guess beta means years, because it's still totally free for Comcast customers.

As stated, no.
But you can use the channel apps of a large number of the channels and stream them using Verizon login.
