You need to check the following:
1) Make sure your phone is paid off and unlocked, and that you don't otherwise have some outstanding balance owed on your account.
2) If this is a mobile number, generally porting is no problem at all. If it's a landline, in some rare instances may not be able to port. At least one other large carrier has a link on their webpage for you to quickly check if you can port your number to them if you're worried your number isn't moveable for whatever reason.
3) Take note of your current account number, because the new carrier needs to know it in order to complete a port in.
4a) If you are a postpaid customer, login to My Verizon and look for wherever "request a transfer PIN" is kept and get a transfer PIN.
4b) If you are a prepaid customer, you can't get a transfer PIN online. Have to go to a Verizon store and get an employee to access your account before the PIN can be generated. Don't ask me why this is, but that's how it works...
5) The transfer PIN has an expiration date, so get your line ported before the PIN expires.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.
