I'm thinking about signing up for Verizon Edge, but only if the edge discount on the line access remains after you pay off the phone.
As soon as you pay off the phone, does the line access fee jump back up to $40/month?
Solved! Go to Correct Answer
What plan are you on now? The line access discount only applies if you are on the More Everything plan. and the amount of the discount is based on your data bucket (6GB or more, $25 discount; up to 6GB, $15 discount). This discount is applicable to an out of contract line, or a line on the EDGE payment plan. It is NOT automatic, but must be added as a feature option through customer service or by going online and applying it.
Yes, but you can then add the out of contract discount.
Thank you! One more question!
In a couple months I will be coming out of the standard 2 year contract. Can this line discount be applied to my current plan or do I have to switch to Edge?
When I'm finally ready to upgrade my phone, I will go to Edge since it's a better deal than the standard 2 year contract for upgrading purposes. But for now, it would be nice to have a discount while I'm out-of-contract.
If they are on the same EMP then you can add the out of contract discount as well.

Yes, I'm on a More Everything plan right now, but will be out-of-contract in June.
I believe it's this format:
4GB or less = $15 discount
6GB or more = $25 discount
Although I don't think this applies to the 500MB plan I managed to swipe before Verizon took it off the market. Verizon really doesn't want you to have a phone bill under $60/month.
I don't want/need more data since I'm usually in a wifi zone. I want a lower cost plan.
Maybe I should go the prepaid route, or switch providers altogether.
I'm kinda wary of prepaid because the map isn't complete. You can end up roaming inside the US in certain areas and pay extra. Probably not a day-to-day concern for me, so it might be worth the risk of domestic roaming charges.
When I'm ready to upgrade, I'll be on Edge and no worries there. But an out-of-contract phone and low data usage is a pita to get a reasonable deal.
Why don't I just go with one of the ultra-cheap US carriers? Because of coverage. It all comes down to coverage with me. I need it in the US and I need it when traveling internationally. None of the cheap US carriers have anything set up to deal with international roaming like the Big Four companies.
For what it is worth, Verizon STILL has a 500MB data tier for $20/month.
As far as I know, the Edge discount will apply to this data tier. You should get a $15/month discount on your $40 smartphone line access fee.
I believe the month to month discount would also apply to this 500MB data tier if you chose to keep your current phone, purchase a new one at full retail or purchase a use one at a site such as swappa.com. Currently, the month to month discount is equivalent to the Edge discount but must be manually added to each eligible line.
With the Edge or month to month discount, it would bring your monthly service charge to $25(line access fee) + $20(data charge) = $45.
If you instead chose to go with the 2 GB data tier, you MAY be able to get a better deal. I believe this is the first tier eligible for employer discount, but I may be mistaken. With this tier, your monthly charge would be $15(line access fee) + $40 = $55, BUT if your data allowance then becomes eligible for any employer discounts for which you may qualify, a 20% employer discount on your data would bring your monthly charge down to $48 with 4 times as much data.
Only if that discount is available at the end of the edge agreement.
My company has no discounts. We're way too small, and everyone literally has a different type of phone and provider. XD we barely have any duplicates of phone or provider among us.
But as long as I can get that $15/month discount on the $40 smartphone line access fee in June, I'll be a happy camper.
