Reconnect deactivated phone number?

I changed the wrong phone number by mistake on My Verizon. This has caused a lot of trouble due to being unable to switch back to the original phone number which we have had for a decade. After explaining the situation to a customer service rep, I was told not to worry and that the original number "wasn't going anywhere". Apparently a ticket was made but I have not heard any updates since then (this was 2 weeks ago). I have since found out that the original number has been deactivated. This is a very frustrating situation and after talking to dozens of reps from diff departments and still not getting any answers, I would like to know if there is any chance that we can get the number back. Thanks
