Transfer a line or port number

So I recently hopped onto my girlfriend's plan, and picked up a new phone, activating a new line of service. My question is how do I keep my old number after already getting a new phone and number? When I attempt to port the number to my current line, it is eligible, but my current line is not due to the installment agreement. I could transfer the line, but I don't want to add a line, I just want my number. Is there a way to transfer the line, swap sims, and then close the line I don't want, while keeping the line with the device installment?
