Usage log timestamps wildly inaccurate

Greetings,

When I examine my usage logs for voice/data/text on My Verizon online, the activity timestamps are way inaccurate.  Please note that this issue does not concern call duration, or cumulative usage totals, or the timestamps shown on a Verizon bill.  It concerns the timestamp shown in the 'Time" column of the online My Verizon usage detail for the current billing period, where the actual time of day the activity occurred is listed. 

At first I guessed that maybe all the times logged are Eastern Daylight Time, so the logs where I am in the Pacific time zone are three hours "too early."  But my attempt to engage an online Chat person to check this was unproductive; s/he just told me all logged times are Pacific, which is clearly wrong.

I searched this Community for similar issues and found one respondent who said the times logged are "when the cell tower reports it" and not "the actual time of the call."  I am skeptical of this because a) I doubt that a significant time difference between those events actually exists and b) I am sitting here at 5:30 pm on 9/20/20 and I am looking at a voice call log that says I made or received a call at 6:30 pm on 9/20/20...an hour into the future.  That is one prescient cell tower.

So...is there any explanation why the timestamps in the online Usage logs are so messed up?

You have certainly done your homework when it comes to comparing the online usage logs to your actual usage, tstoakdale. Almost all the information we have given you, based on your summary, has elements of truth within it. Please allow me to explain further. When it comes to call and text logs, we make every effort to display usage in real time. In other words, a call you made an hour ago is expected to be on your call logs within the hour if not sooner. The timestamp you see on that display may be in any time zone, since we have servers in multiple locations. The timestamp is given in the local time zone where the call or text was processed through. That can vary from one call or text to the next. When your bill generates, the call and text times are updated based on your billing zip code, and so you see these details shown in your local time zone.

 

Data records are a bit different. Many data records are timestamped when the usage is reported, and not necessarily the actual time the data was used. This is the reason you are getting conflicting answers from representatives when it comes to the timestamps you see on your My Verizon online. Does this help clear up the details?

Thanks for your reply.

What I conclude from your answer is that the timestamps in the online logs are just much pretty meaningless...or can be, and therefore are simply unreliable.  You can't tell what time zone the reported time is in, for instance.  So, yes, I guess that does clear up the details.

Oh, well...one of those First World problems.  I won't lose sleep.

If the timestamps on the data usage data are useless, why does Verizon continue to display them at all?  And more significantly... if you can adjust the timestamps when presenting a user's bill, why can't you code a solution for altering the timestamps before displaying them under data usage details?
