I am currently going through suspending my Airman’s account while they are deployed far away for a year. Verizon offers a plan but it is very expensive vs local plan and the process is not going smoothly. My suggestion is to partner with local cellular providers to add a second phone line with local number that they can select from. (Similar to having 2 lines on the same phone today) This plan would charge and work the same amount as a domestic plan but would be in that area. So for example I would have my US number and an Italian number that I would use in country but when I am on leave I could switch sim to US with ease. You would still need to verify leave orders to participate. Benefits for me: Ease of access, keep my number without the suspension hassle, and no change to plan. Benefits for Verizon: Maintain a customer, continue to get money, and no need to suspend service. Obviously if you used the US sim in other countries it would charge you.
