Can not Port existing cell phone to Verizon account

I am trying to port an existing number from US Cellular to Verizon.  I have been told by Verizon that my number is not available.  I checked with other carriers (i.e. AT&T) and they are able to port my number.  Verizon has not been able to give me an explanation of why this is.  I have an existing Verizon account and I have been a Verizon customer for over 20 years, both personal and business.  I do not want to get a new number because it would involve a lot of time and effort to change my telephone number again.  Can someone  please explain to me why this is.
