I have a Verizon family plan with four phones/lines and one of my family members doesn't want his phone any longer--he wants to get his own plan with another carrier. His phone/line is the only one left with a contract end date--the other three are month to month. I asked to have the contract end date switched to one of the other phones/lines on my family plan so I can get rid of that phone/line since the number will be ported to another carrier anyway and was told it can't be done. I don't understand this and wasn't given any good answers as to why this can't be done. It really doesn't make any sense to me since I would still be paying for three phones/lines anyway if I dropped one of the month-to-month phones/lines and I would have to pay until the end of the contract because it would still be attached to one of the other three phones/lines on the family plan. There didn't seem to be any problem with switching phone/line contracts around when applying a month-to-month phone/line discount to another phone/line to get a new phone free or at a discounted price. Can anyone seriously explain this without it sounding completely vague or ridiculous? "Just because that's the way it is" is not a valid answer.

I understand Verizon's need to have policies and the enforce them.. however, I agree with Ctorri as I am in a similar situation... I have two phones on my family plan and my contract ends today, my second line has 6 months remaining... Why should I not be allowed to assume the contract of my second phone... Verizon will still have that contract satisified since all I am interested in, is releasing the second number to a different carrier... Verizon Customer support was not able to explain why this is not possible, just gave me the response they did not have the ability to do so, which I find highly unlikely...
Never the less, I am done arguing with them about it and because they refuse to help the situation I will be switching to a different carrier and in 6 months when my second line contract is satisfied, that line will also be leaving Verizon.
Your answer is accurate but while you are correct, that it is not the answer I want to hear so I am choosing to take my business elsewhere, as I suggest you do ctorri... Verizon does not have to do anything about this because people will continue to pay their contracts without having to offer the ability to assume, a phone under your accounts contract, to a month-to-month line...
Bottom Line: Verizon does not switch contract dates between lines, even if the lines are under your family plan.

The answer is obvious. Verizon does not allow you to switch your contract to another line of service because they want you to complete the contract while, at the same time, continue making payments on the other line. They don't want to make it easy for you to get out from under a contract and cancel the line of service. That is the obvious reason and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I didn't like it either when I continued to carry a line I didn't need for almost 2 years just to keep an old phone number I had, but that's the way it is.

^^ that is how you should have answered Ctorri the first time haha... that is the obvious reason and Verizon knows that there is GREAT valve for someone to keep the same phone number they have had... so yup!
Sucks, but Verizon doesn't care about making things better for you... they care about the money and know you will continue to pay!

And that's precisely what they should care about. Their ONLY objective is to maximize profits in the long run. That is what American corporations do and the only reason they exist. Buy stock in Verizon and participate in their success.

There is a workaround that Verizon will never tell you, that they CANNOT deny you... but it is very much a workaround.
The number you want to keep... PORT IT OUT to another provider. Google Voice works great for this.
A day later, PORT IT BACK IN on TOP of the number you want to be rid of. And, if needed, activate the correct equipment on the correct number.

You dont even have to port out. Just call them and disconnect the line without the contract. The mdn stays reserved to your account temporarily so you can the just do a simple mdn change on one of the other lines with that "reserved" mdn.
