Data overage charges

This continuously happens to us.  Happened again a few minutes ago.  With less than 24 hours left in the monthly data cycle, we reach our family plan data limit, and are automatically charged another $15, for less than a day's worth of data.  Why can't I refuse the overage charge and just have data turned off for the balance of the cycle if I choose to?  I have been charged this with just a few hours left in the cycle before.

Which plan do you have?

Family plan with 6G data.  Whenever we go over, it is always with less than a day left in our plan.  Is there no way to refuse the overage data and just have data turn off for the balance of the cycle (which is typically only about 12 hours)?

There is no such thing as a "Family Plan with 6 GB data". As in there was no such name for a plan. What is the specific name of the plan as stated on your bill?

Perhaps it is time you reevaluated your plan and compare them to the current offerings and see if it is time to change your plan to better reflect your usage and budget.

We have 3 phones sharing 6G data.  In months where we go over, it is always with less than 24 hours remaining in our monthly cycle.  We are automatically charged $15 and given another 1G, which then goes away when the cycle resets.  I am trying to understand if there is an option to refuse the overage charge and just have data turned off whenever we reach our monthly limit.  Every time we have gone over, it has been with just hours left in the cycle, so we can do without data for those couple hours, rather than moving to a more expensive plan.

The newer Verizon plans have what's called "Safety Mode" - when you reach your plan allowance, the data slows to a crawl (but is probably ok for email checking) and there is no overage charge.  You also have "Carryover" data; any unused data from the previous month is added to your allotment for the current month.  BUT, you need to be on the new Verizon S, M, or L plan, and those data allotments are 2, 4, and 8 GB.

How much are you paying for the 6 GB now? Check the pricing on the new plans, and see what the difference is.  Another factor to account for is if the phones you have a re on a device payment plan, or paid for, on on contract.  That will make a difference in the line access fee for each line, so you really need to do the math and figure what is most cost effective.  You can change plans at any time with no penalty.

As to your original question, can you stop the data at 6 gb and avoid overages, the answer is no, not through Verizon, You would need to do it yourself by turning off the phones  - and there's no guarantee that it would work, since some data may be reported at a time you don't expect, especially if yo a re trying to time it to the end of your cycle.
