Double charges

So I first got my phone on my 18th birthday 6 months ago, and there is something I've realized when looking back on my bill. I was trying to figure out recently why I've been having to pay so much for my phone, starting my first month and when I looked at it, I was extremely mad. I paid $110 for my plan when I first got my phone and later called to change my plan to unlimited, being told it would only be an extra $20 a month, and when I looked to see, they not only charged me the $110 upfront when I first got the phone, but they also charged me an extra $135 that same month so when my bill for July came, it said I owed $290 for that month I had it. Is this normal? I don't think it is, and I don't know if I can still do something about it because it's been a few months since it happened, but I still want to know.

Verizon bills in advance and has done so for years. If you made a change mid cycle, you're going to be billed the month in advance and any mid cycle changes.

Check your bill. Unless the dates for one time charges matches the normal charges, that's what it was.

When I initially got my phone on June 26th, 2020, I paid $25 for the phone itself for that month, $65 to turn the phone on, and a $20 fee to connect my phone in the first place, my total came out to about $110 which I was fine with. About a week later I call to ask how much it would cost for me to switch to unlimited data and I was told an extra $20. So why is it when I check to see what my bill for the first month it, it tells me that I owe $290 on July 17th? Not only is the price way too high, but it also tells me it is due 8 or 9 days before a month has passed?
