MHS....yes or no? I have no clue :/

I have a question! I currently have a data plan of 4 gigs with mhs. I want to increase my data plan because I keep going over and am paying way too much in overage charges. When I went in to change it, there were different options, like 10 gigs with mhs or 10 gigs without. Which is the better plan? I'm not really understanding the use of the mobile hot spot and if it's something I even need to have. If someone could explain to me the difference and whether it's a good idea to get the mhs, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks Smiley Happy

Happy that you asked! I'm glad to explain the difference. MHS or Mobile Hotspot is the option in the phone that allows for you to connect other devices, like a tablet or laptop, to your phone so that they have access to the internet through your phone. This is really helpful for those that need an external device to have internet access on the go. MHS does use from the data allowance of your particular plan, so if you have a 4GB or 10GB plan with MHS, then any usage you do on MHS will take out of that allowance in addition to whatever internet usage you do on your actual phone.

Mobile Hotspot is tethering. Using your phones connection on other devices.

mobile hotspot? its a portable router. say you go somewhere and they don't have internet. get into mobile hotspot on your phone there you will have a wifi name and password. enter it into computer or other wireless device and it will connect the device to the internet.

so if you get without then cannot use the mhs or huge over rates if you do

other way 10 gig for verizon devices on account

Kat,

If you don't know or understand what the Mobile Hotspot is, odds are good you are not using it, and do not need it.

Having said that... a few questions about your usage may help us better determine if it would benefit you to have it and use it.  Your phone, by default, uses your Verizon cellular data plan when you access the internet with the browser on the phone, when you check email, use the navigation, play games, etc.  Smartphones also have wifi, meaning you can use your home's internet connection, or public wifi, to connect to the internet and use THAT dta rather than your cell phone plan.

Other devices (tablets, pc's) typically use wifi to connect - using your home internet or public wifi.  The mobile hotspot on your phone allows you to use that to connect your tablet or a pc to the internet in the absence of other wifi, and it DOES use your phone's cellular data.

Do you have wifi at home?  The hotpot would not be needed.

Do you have a tablet or laptop that you take places where there is no available wifi to tap into?  This the situation where the hotpsot would be useful, say on a camping trip or road trip where you would want internet for your computer.

Hope this helps....

Thank you for that reply! I do not have wifi at home. We actually don't have Internet at home at all because we pay so much for data on our phones, although we have been considering it. I had no clue that I could have gotten online on my pc by using my phone lol.

I have been considering getting a tablet. If the tablet is through verizon, would I need the mhs to connect with it or would it already be connected since it's through the plan? After yours and the other comments, I'm thinking the only reason I'd need it is if I decided to get a tablet, but only if it's needed to connect the tablet.

Thanks again!

If you do have mobile hotspot capability, yes, you can use the phone to connect your computer to the internet - but it will use your phone's data allowance and and eat it up in a hurry.

If the tablet is through verizon, would I need the mhs to connect with it or would it already be connected since it's through the plan?   If you get a tablet through Verizon, it would share your data plan.  It would be connected, though it will have the wifi option so you can connect while at Starbucks or the Library or other public wifi access spots.  After yours and the other comments, I'm thinking the only reason I'd need it is if I decided to get a tablet, but only if it's needed to connect the tablet.  Using the mhs on your phone to connect your Verizon tablet would be pointless - the tablet can connect directly; and it all uses the same data pool.

Thanks again!

And also...how do I access the mhs? I read somewhere that you have a username and password and such. How do I set this up to use it if I want to? I don't know of you need the info or if I do it online, but I have a Galaxy S4

If the mhs is on your phone you have an app that access it and you have a factory name and password." like galaxy 5 s" when you search for wireless network" you can change to "tyler's hotspot"    the factory passwords are usually somewhat complex so i would recommend changing the password to something you use commonly for a password. "unless you let others use your hotspot. you will have to change the factory security option or it will not allow you to change it will be greyed out" so change to wep but do NOT leave open or it will allow anyone that sees your hotspot to connect to it when active......

There are hotspots that you carry around like a little box that has a code that can be changed but wouldn't recommend doing so.  Just message me if you need any help setting any of it up.
