Phone service seriously degraded over last few months

Our Verizon phone service has seriously degraded over the last few months.  We live in SW Montana zip 59721.  We are a long time Verizon customer and have gone from consistently having multiple bars to having 0 to 2 bars.  Calls frequently go to voice mail without phone ringing, and we frequently have to try multiple times to make out going calls.  I have checked phone settings, turned airplane mode on and off, turned phones on and off, pulled sim cards trying to reset.   Something on Verizon's end has changed and if it doesn't improve we will have to change carriers.  Wondering if there are other SW Montanans who had similar problems and switched carriers with good results.
