Poor Coverage and Getting Worse

I have been a Verizon customer for nearly 20 years.  For most of that time, I have stuck with Verizon because the coverage was hands down the best.

Over the last 2 years, Verizon's coverage has gotten worse and worse.  I live in the populous suburbs of Chicago, not in the stix.  I work in a major government office, also in the suburbs.  Yet, if I walk from one side of my house to another, I lose any call I'm on.  My phone doesn't even ring sitting on my desk in my office.

And that's just voice coverage.  At work, 6 out of 10 times I can't get anything better than a 1x data signal, let alone LTE.  I may as well just use my phone as a paperweight during the day, and at home I have to go through my home's wi-fi to be able to do anything on it.

Verizon needs to resolve it's coverage issues quickly.  It is about that time that I take my business somewhere else.

Jfpoje, having reliable services that you can depend on is always the experience that we want for you to have. I would never want to lose you as part of the VZW Family. I can understand your concern and want to look into this closely. I wanted to ask if you have only noticed this issue with your device? If so I would like for us to troubleshoot this matter. What is the zip code that you are experiencing this issue?

Hi,

My wife’s phone has significant connection issues while in our home as well.  I obviously can’t speak to whether her phone works at my place of work.

Zip codes in question are 60526 and 60153.

Thank you for those details, jfpoje.

We always want you to have the best wireless experience with our services. Please allow me to explain that indoor use is a challenge for all carriers. In a case like this, where the trouble is indoors only, generally the relevant factor is going to be proximity to cell site. Due to physics, radio frequencies get reduced penetration through solid materials and thus indoor signal is hampered when compared to outdoor signal. This is the reason you may notice a difference when stepping outside. As no carrier can guarantee indoor coverage, we partner with our manufacturers to build indoor solutions such as WiFi Calling. Now that the devices have advanced, a Network Extender is no longer needed. WiFi Calling is free and unlimited, and it is a great indoor solution. Your phone can utilize your WiFi signal for calls, just like you do for data. Check out this page for more information: https://www.verizon.com/support/wifi-calling-faqs/

While I appreciate the general information, it is not applicable to our situation.  First, my desk at work is literallly next to a window and my phone won't ring there.  Second, there are only a handful of places OUTSIDE my workplace where I can get a clean, reliable signal for voice or data.  Third, there is at least one stretch of road between my work and home where my calls drop if I'm on the phone while driving through.  Fourth, it's the same situation at my home.  I have to stand in certain places inside and OUTSIDE my house just to get a signal, and if I'm on a call I can't walk around at all or the voice signal breaks up or drops completely.  So, it would appear that Verizon has just decided that the west suburbs of Chicago are not worth having enough cell tower coverage, or is not maintaining the ones that are here adequately.  This has been getting progressively worse over the past 2 years I would say.

jfpoje, we never want you to struggle with a signal. While you are indoors, are you using Wi-Fi for calling, texting and data? This is a great indoor coverage solution that we recommend when indoors. -Alicia

"not maintaining the ones that are here adequately"

Here is the reason.

This response to the increasingly awful status of Verizon's cell network coverage really is completely inappropriate and dodges the issue. I have been having the same issues at my house, so have my neighbors. Are you trying to tell us that we have all changed the structures of our homes and mad it harder for your signals to work. Even the signal in my yard is worse so I don't really buy that. I have been shopping for a new provider as well because I pay an incredible amount of money every month for increasingly poor coverage. Even our data signal has been awful lately. Last night a friend who lives a hour away from me who also has Verizon stated that she and her husband are having the same issue and just like me it is not just at home and work it is even in their own yard. We pay for the fillet mignon and we are being served cube steak. Seriously Verizon. What's going on?

I & my husband have the same problem that many others have described with Verizon service.  We have never used another carrier.  Cell phone service anywhere in zip code 37660 & environs was quite satisfactory until early September 2021.  Since then, we can rarely make or receive voice calls at our home, and sending or receiving text messages is often problematic.  Signal strength, as indicated on our phones' displays, is extremely low within our house, and we have periods with no service at all.  Outside our house, we usually have signal, but our phones indicate the signal is less than it used to be, and sometimes service is entirely absent.  This is much different from our experience for many years.

Our phones are unchanged, our house is unchanged, the other locations where we use our phones are unchanged, but Verizon service is changed to the point where it is often unusable.  Something within the Verizon network has happened to cause signal to be significantly reduced in and around zip code 37660.  From other posts, this seems to be true in other locations distant from ours.

What is going on, and what prospect is there of restoring Verizon service to what it had been only a few months ago?

Kathleen40330, making sure you have the services you need is important. Allow us the opportunity to further investigate this matter. Does your service concern happen primarily indoors or outdoors? How far do you have to travel to receive a consistent connection? Also, what is the Make/Model of your devices?  -Sylvia

We are having the same problem in Middle Tennessee.  I've had Verizon since 2003.  Now calls drop all the time. If I move two feet in my front yard I lose the call.

Verizon used to be the best.  Not true anymore.

No one likes dropped calls including myself. I do appreciate your loyalty. I am sure we will figure out what is going on. Is anyone else having this issue? What are your cross streets and zip code? Does it get better outdoors? -Amber

Dropped calls and garbled calls have been happening more and more for the past year.  Our zip code is 37067.  We are experiencing poor service in Franklin TN and Nashville TN.  Makes no difference if we are inside or outside.  Friends in East TN have the same problems.

The poor service is all over Franklin and Nashville.  Not just one point on the map.

The information about the scope occurring in a number of locations leads me to ask about the device. What is the make and model of the phone? Are there locations where it is not garbled?  -David

Also a VZW customer for over 15 yrs! Kept Verizon because I spend a lot of time in remote locations of AZ, NM, and UT. Previously I'd be the only one with service, now over the last year I'm the only one without service....... Futhermore it's pretty bad when calls now get routinely dropped along the stretch of a well travelled interstate highway between Phoenix and Tucson. Before you blame my phone (that you sold me) It's not my device either as I've had great luck with this one previously in the same places more than a year ago. This is a safety issue frankly and not worth the higher price I pay to VZW over lower cost service.

My wifi calling is on….not a solution.

It doesn’t seem to matter if I’m indoors or outdoors, my service is still ridiculously slow and if I’m outside in a high populated area, I don’t have the option for WiFi all of the time. My phone will have 2-3 bars and say 5G and it’s super slow. Constantly lagging in the middle of the night while I try streaming shows. But I’m also expected to continue to pay an astronomical amount every month while the expensive service that I pay for continues to get worse. Something needs to be done about this because Verizon charges top dollar for there now crumby service. I’ve had enough of the gouging from greedy corporations. Give us the service that we pay for!
