I have been a customer of Verizon for over 15 years. I recently spoke with a customer service representative from Verizon and found that I could have more features and save $12 off of my monthly service charge by switching plans. However, changing plans will result in extending my contract another year. Why would a company treat new customers better than long time, loyal ones?
Right now my plan only has 450 minutes with 500 texts and 2GB of data. The new plan would give me unlimited talk/text and 2GB of data for around $12 less than what I'm paying now. If I were truly valued as a customer, wouldn't Verizon simply switch me to the better and less expensive plan without forcing me to sign a contract extension? Do they not have the confidence in their service to allow me to get the more affordable plan without extending my contract?
Honestly, behavior like this makes me feel much less loyal to Verizon and more inclined to switch to another carrier. I've always had great service with Verizon and have always recommended Verizon to my friends and family, but I'm not sure if that's going to remain the case much longer.

I don't know who or why they are attempting to extend your contract for changing plans, but that's blatantly incorrect according to Verizon Wireless FAQ.

That is actually correct, the plan he is trying to switch to is a loyalty plan, all loyalty plans come with a 1 year contract extension, that extension doesn't effect anything on the account and he can still upgrade if he's eligible.

I assumed the OP was referring to the $75 individual line plan.

Just based on his plan that he has now it's already at $74.99 before tax.

JoeNobody... You need to send them a Follow request by hovering over their user name lindseyt_vzw and clicking Follow; they'll have to approve that request. They likewise will have to send you a Follow request that you'll have to approve; once they send the Follow request, you can find it in your forum inbox. Once you both are Following each other, then you can send them a Direct Message by again hovering over their user name and clicking Message.
