I need to temporarily suspend my Verizon phone number due to unwanted calls -- what exactly will people hear when they call my number if it's been suspended? A busy signal, or a message saying the number has been temporarily suspended?
I don't want people calling my number to know it was temporarily suspended. I want them to think the number was been completely deactivated, or given no information.

When you suspend your line, callers will reach a message inferring that the phone number is not available or no longer active. It will not outright say the number was suspended.
