Unlimited Data Confusion

A few months ago I was informed at a Verizon store that I had until December to get under a 2 year agreement otherwise I would lose my unlimited data. My only option was to purchase a phone full retail and if I did a monthly installment plan, then I would automatically lose unlimited data.
Just yesterday, that same store told me that my ONLY option to keep unlimited data was to sign the 2 year agreement and to do the monthly installment on the phone of my choice.
Today, however, I called Verizon and the lady I spoke with told me I was NOT required to sign a new plan OR do a monthly installment on a new phone in order to keep my unlimited data.
At this point, I don't know who has the accurate info and who doesn't.
Anyone have any thoughts?

michael042592, as a Verizon rep, your experience leaves me wincing. Our goal is to provide you with accurate information the first time, and we are sorry this was not the case. Forum member buddyguyfriend is correct by providing the different options you have towards getting a new device.
As far as the increase in cost for unlimited, that is true too. Perhaps we can evaluate to see if this is the best plan for you. If you log into your MyVerizon account, how much data does it show that you are using? Hi mama23dogs,

I have bought iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7(which i returned due to connectivity issue) on verizon version from Apple store directly. The staff there was so helpful. After I told them about this BS $20 fee, they just help me to take my current active SIM card to activate the new phone (like switching LTE devices). There is no $20 fee on my bill whatsoever. I am not sure about other phones beside iPhones though.

You won't loose unlimited data if you buy the phone out right (full retail price).

But here is what I recommend if you want to buy full price phone;

1) if you buy iPhone, better to buy from apple store directly, you can buy either Verizon or SIM free versions. It's all unlocked. However, don't use the SIM card coming with it (in case you buy verizon verizon version) or you will pay $20 upgrade fee. I have done so many times without issue and I still have unlimited data with me.

2) Android phone, same as iphone buying. Don't use SIM card coming with it, use your current active SIM card, you are good to go.

3) Try to avoid Verizon store because they try to drive you away from unlimited data. Get 2 year contract with them is "NO NO".

Hope it helps.

Actually if you buy a carrier version at full price you still pay the $20 upgrade fee.  Hold out for the SIM free version.

I have unlimited data since when it was first available.  I was forced to buy my S3 and Note 4 out right to keep my data plan.  I JUST called this morning and ALSO tried to upgrade through the app.  I AM ABLE to keep my data plan if I decide to pay off the full price of the phone of the new note 7 coming out, over 24 months.  OR sign a new 2 year contract and pay for the phone at 299.99 and still keep my unlimited data.  I am very pleased they brought that back.  Been a Verizon customer since the first Android phone.  The 2 year contract doesn't bother me,  and paying for the new note 7 at 300 bucks for current holders of unlimited data, is amazing.  Version just got more awesome for grand fathered members.

I Would be worried you have received incorrect information and you will lose your unlimited data. Verizon has not changed its policy to allow unlimited plans to get 2 year contracts and get a subsidized phone. If you want to keep unlimited you will need to buy the new phone full price or finance over 24 months interest free. You have been warned.

Actually, I tried to do it online myself, I tried to do it on the mobile

app, and I called Four different reps this morning and had them act like

they were upgrading my phone, and all of them said yes. I would keep it.

Also all four of them didn't even know about it until I brought it to their

attention. Did verizon sneak this back in? Cause I definitely can upgrade

by signing a new 2 year contract and keep my unlimited data plan. I also

plan to go into the store and talk to live person to confirm as well after

work today. I'll keep you guys posted on if I am successful on this.

Verizon policy is you cannot use a discounted upgrade and retain your grandfathered unlimited plan

I strongly suspect if you upgrade at a discount, you will find the plan gone on your next bill and Verizon will consider it voluntary and NOT restore the plan no matter what.

SInce it can't be reversed, I wouldn't do it unless you're ready to give up the plan anyway.

THe offer in November is you can use device payments to upgrade or continue to pay full price.

How come it allows me to check out and Complete the order? With a 2 year

contract with unlimted data still. I will find out in person around 5pm.

BY all means keep us updated. I strongly suspect that no matter what the reps say, the web page shows you, or what the reps don't know you will get changed to a 2 GB plan once you activate the new phone on the line.

I have screen shots of me trying to upgrade.  I do have the option to select unlimted data as well as others data packages.

Are you transferring an upgrade? If you are you can keep unlimited, BUT the line upgraded will have a 2GB data plan that can't be removed for 2 years. You can move the data allotment up or down but it will stay. You can't put a basic phone and have it removed for example.

Not upgrading a second line. I have just one line with unlimited data. It

gives me three options to upgrade. Pay over two years, pay for the phone,

or sign contract for two years and pay for the phone at 299.99... For the

note 7.

And we are telling you if you use the contract option you will lose your unlimited plan.  You can't blame a glitch in the online order process when you have known for years you can't upgrade with a contract.

Thanks for the enlightenment, I will find out the outcome 😃 it's too good

to be true to not investigate.

For what it is worth and I would suggest reading the entire article. http://www.droid-life.com/2016/07/07/verizon-unlimited-data-upgrade/

Pins and needles.

ANd I don't trust support.  They sometimes scare me with how little they know.

Michael, sounds like they were both correct. Let's see if we can clear this matter up. Some of our customers had different plans and contract dates. Everything depended on what plan and contract you were or are on. We need to take a closer look at this for you.

If you want to get a new phone thru Verizon you'll need to pay full price either upfront or via device payments. Also once your contract is up expect your data price to increase form $30 a month to $50. The only way to get a 2 year contract is to get an phone with a discounted upgrade which you can't on unlimited data anymore. Honestly don't expect unlimited data to stick around much longer.
