In the last week I have twice received phone calls that went to vm, and when I listened to the vm it was an old deleted message, not the new one. The first time the call was restricted, but the second time the call was from my son's school and when I played the message it was a very old deleted message from a bank. What's going on?

Are you using Verizon's voicemail or visual voicemail? That's strange behavior - I would call customer service and have them look at your account, possibly reset it.
If you are using a third party voicemail or an app, I would try deleting it and reinstalling it to see if that clears things up.
