What is this account? I didn't open it and I'm getting a collection notice but no Verizon bill with details.

A collection agency is pestering me about an account in my name I didn't open. I get my service as an additional line on another's account in her name and it's paid up. How do I find out what this account is? It smells like a scam.

SpareSimian, this is definitely concerning to hear as I want all of your billing to be correct. Help is here. Have you ever had a Verizon Wireless account associated with your name? Does it show Verizon Wireless or Verizon Fios? Lastly are you receiving Verizon Wireless bills or billing from a collections agency?

To my knowledge, I've never had a Verizon account in my name. I'm wondering if this is identity theft. My phone is a second line on my sister's account with Verizon, so it's in HER name.

The letter I have is from a collection agency and says Verizon Wireless with a Verizon account number and an account number for the agency. There's no mobile number provided. I've never received a bill from Verizon for this account, but the legitimate account is paperless and paid online. Perhaps there's some way to convert their Verizon account number to a mobile number so I can make a better guess what this is or review the account online.

We're paid up on my legitimate account. We got this notice for this mystery account, and almost paid it unthinkingly until we got suspicious and thought maybe it was a scam, as we'd just paid the "real" account. I don't want to suddenly see another big bill next month for some bogus account.

No mobile number (or I'd attempt to register a web account to investigate) but they give this account number: [removed]

Account number removed as required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service

The best thing to do is call Verizon's Financial Service Department at 1-866-266-1445. They would be able to assist you with this issue. They would be the ones who would forward accounts to collection.
