Why did someone calling me get "this number is no longer in service"

Please help me understand why another Verizon Wireless Customer calling me from 1.5 miles away would receive the message that "this number is no longer in service".  Immediately after that failed call attempt, he dialed my number from a landline and it went through fine.  I met him and he showed me his call logs which confirmed he had indeed dialed my number.

I don't understand how this could happen and whether it is occurring more frequently then just this one call?

Were they using a saved contact to dial your number?  If so, did they try dialing manually?  Does it repeatedly occur for that caller when they call you?  What kind of phone were they using and prepaid/postpaid?

He responded by dialing from a text I had just sent him but he has my number in his contact list and it is correct.  I met him on site and he did indeed dial the correct number as verified in his call log.  It is a corporate account and a new generation 5G phone.  The call was made 1.5 miles from my home.  I have no idea if anyone else is having the same issue trying to contact me though we are all told by business associates that at times calls to all 5 of our phones fail to go through - I don't know what message they receive.
