Why does verizon dislike loyal customers more than new customers?

I have been a loyal customer since the days of Alltel. I was looking to upgrade and Verizon wants to charge me over 4 tomes as much per month as a new customer for the same exact equipment. How does this make any sense?

We would never do that to you. Where are you receiving this 4 times the pricing information. Have you updated/changed your plan recently? AustinL_VZW

The information is straight from the Verizon website.To purchase the Motorola moto z4 as a new customer it costs$5. To upgrade as an existing customer it costs $23+. Clearly favoring the new customer. I am looking to upgrade 2 phones, so it would be 46+ a month versus $10 a month. How can you in good conscience not say that greatly favors a new customer?

If you never been to a restaurant before, would you drop an expensive bill on a chance? Probably not. Would you with a half off coupon? More likely. This is common.

Cable companies are a good example of doing this all the time with their first year pricing. Loyalty doesn't mean much for business or consumer. If these prices don't appeal to you, there are other carriers. The same complaint is on their own forums with them considering switching to Verizon.

You can get equal treatment. The new customer is opening a "new line of service" in order to get that offer. You don't want to open a "new line of service" so you don't qualify.

Receiving the offer WITHOUT opening a new line of service IS "special treatment" as it is something the new customer is required to do and you are unwilling to do so.

You can get this exact same offer with another provider if you would like and ALL providers offer this to people who open new lines of service. Of course, most people think the extra work to switch carriers every 2 years is more work than the phone they purchase is worth which is why there are only about 1% of customers who switch carriers each year vs 20% - 30% of customers who purchase new phones each year.

I understand your point, however I submit that while I choose not to open a new line of service i am still committing for the same amount of time to Verizon as the new customer with no recompense that is afforded the new customer. I am very satisfied with the network coverage, however, the availability of upgrade phones at a good price point is a problem for me.

It appears that the issue is that I do not want to open a new line of service. I am currently looking at another carrier, although I like the coverage offered by Verizon, I believe the inequality of offers for new versus existing customers to be a deal breaker.

Whatever floats your boat, you will

leave one provider because the deals they offer new customers are better than the deals they offer CURRENT customers who don't want to open a new line of service

AND

move to a different provider because of the deals they are offering NEW customers but are not available to their current customers who don't want to open a new line of service.

It appears you don't really care whether or not a provider offers the same deals to new/existing customers as long as YOU are the one who is benefiting. You will be facing the same predicament next time you want a new phone.

This is not really a valid point as there ARE smartphones available starting at $100. Apple is even starting to sell an iPhone which starts at $400 vs the $1000 top tier iPhones. It sounds more like the fact you want something for which you are either unwilling or able to afford.

I respect your right to your opinion, I do take issue with the generalization you make about me. You do not know me , my situation or my true motives. I do agree on the surface my motives appear selfish, however anything that benefits one existing customer will benefit all existing customers.

I'm not sure what generalizations you THINK I am making about you, but you would be incorrect. I assume you mean my statement below:

THAT is not a generalization. That is a statement saying you either have the money to purchase an expensive device and choose not to do so OR you don't have the money to do so. Basically, I am saying you either have the money or you don't have the money. No generalizations one way or the other BUT one of the two IS the case. Now YOU are making generalizations. The discount to which you refer means accounts of a minimum of 2 lines. What about those customers who only have one line. How are THEY benefiting?

Furthermore, the money which would make these discounts possible has to come from somewhere. Where is Verizon going to take that money in order to provide the discounts to the 50-75 million(150 million customers with the AVERAGE customer purchasing a new device every 2-3 years) phone purchases each year? IF Verizon has to limit the amount they spend on their network in order to subsidize all of those phones, that would NOT benefit "all existing customers". On the contrary, it would do the exact opposite. Of course, I certainly don't know where all of that extra money would come from, but you would certainly have to consider that as a possibility.

THIS is why Verizon limits these BOGO deals to NEW customers since that is ~1.5 - 3 million NEW customers each year(1% - 2% churn rate) vs 50 - 75 million CURRENT customers purchasing new phones each year. It is a MUCH smaller amount to subsidize.
