Airplane mode and roaming on Razr MAXX overseas?

My son has his cell (Motorola Razr MAXX) with him on a study abroad trip for the next 11 weeks. He has his phone set to "airplane mode" and WiFi on, and is only using it (not for calling or texting, only uploading) in WiFi hotspots. I've been seeing posts from people who were unpleasantly surprised by hefty roaming fees upon returning from overseas, even though they thought airplane mode would negate such a possibility. Does he have to go back into his settings and remove "data enabled," and deny "global roaming access" to ensure that roaming is NOT AT ALL POSSIBLE? A quick answer would be deeply appreciated, 'cuz I'm kinda freakin' out here....!!! Thanks for any feedback!

Being in airplane mode with wifi turned on should prevent any cellular data or calling from happening.
He might want to look into getting a local SIM card to replace the Verizon one and he would be able to make calls and/or use cellular data while he is over there at a reasonable price. Just keep the Verizon SIM card so he can switch back when he returns to the US.

It might actually be a good idea to remove the SIM card before leaving the country to prevent any accidental usage.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Yes; so far, no calls or texts are getting through (we are using Viber *wink wink* for free texting/calling in WiFi spots) but right now I am more concerned with whether or not there is some undesired roaming activity going on. The helpful folks at Verizon customer service have not been able to tell me if there is any roaming on his account. Some other posters in this forum have been levied roaming fees, even with airplane mode turned on.
What a good idea about the SIM card! Thanks to both of you for that.... I'll pass that along. Seeing as he's in Japan aka Technology Central, that should be easy peasy!
